I thought I'd chime in here since I'm on my 4th BMW. They are fantastic cars but require maintenance, not unlike our boxsters.
Had two five series (one 1998 and one 2001) which I sold with nearly 150k. Both required nothing but preventative maintenance, great cars!
Then I drove an 05 7 series which was my favorite car I've ever had! It was definitely a high maintenance car which required a lot of repairs. Got to be way too expensive to drive, I was scared to death of the next warning light.
Currently have a 328 diesel. Still under warranty with maintenance plan, time will tell but so far it's been a great car.
