Mine has wobble and no grease at 130k miles. I'd consider it. Glad I didn't skip it.

Just compare the specs of the Old vs.New Mobil 1 and JGDT40. Significant differences .

My 04 has the Mobile 1 sticker.

Hold on. I'll do that math. Seems 20+ year claim is too much.

Hey. 11 years.

^ Bingo.

We have heard from people who take these engines apart AFTER 100K miles, and they all seem to be on the same page. If you can budget for a better quality oil, you definitely want to do so. This isn't a Jetta.
And none of these engine experts are wild about Mobil 1 on these older cars. The Tony Callas piece in Excellence Magazine some time back was interesting to me. Here is a magazine that is heavily "influenced" by having a good
relationship with Porsche (and their official oil) and they still printed his opinion that "mass market" oil are not such a great idea anymore as they see fewer and fewer protective additives going in. And not surprisingly.... the prices have been coming down, even before this (temporary) crude oil collapse. Meanwhile those protective additives.... yep still expensive.

Like anything else in life, as the engine gets older, it needs more looking after. When you've got a brand new engine and you're getting every one of the ponies you paid for, the old Mobil 1 was probably okay (so as long as you drove the car frequently and didn't let it sit). As it gets older it needs some extra protection. Buying oil you'll change once a year, in most cases, on the basis of which is the cheapest acceptable option is nuts.
What's worse is if you register low mileage and the car sits for long stints, then the cheapest acceptable option isn't really worth the $50 you saved and spent on dinner that night.

Where are the specs for JGDT40? I can't find the ZDDP numbers for example.

I am not all that convinced the above link is something I would trust,

If he is that good of a of an engineer I would of expected a write in a professional organization magazine.

Think I will stick with what is working for me.

Mobil 1 0W-40 has been fine for me. It also makes recycling the used oil easier pouring it back into the 5 qt jugs, instead of messing with trying to pour the used oil into all those 1 qt bottles.

You listen Jake Raby? We need the the DT40 in 5 qt jugs!

If we had ZDDP numbers for JGDT40,would we know if it is good/bad ? Tribology is a tough enough subject to master but when you overlay the M96 quirks on the subject it becomes fiendishly complicated to figure out which is best oil based on any data.
It comes down to faith in whoever makes a recommendation. So it is a 1990's Mobil spec that is no longer available vs.JGDT40 Lake Speed/Raby.
This link gives some comparative data for Mobil 1 vs. JGDT40.Just scroll down to the piece on oil.

No...but it's a start. And they specifically advertise the product as "high zinc". "High" is relative. I'm a science person - I want to see numbers back up a claim.

No offense since you seem like a good guy with good intentions, but these statements made my jaw drop!
I never take a manufacturers word for their product as they are obviously trying to turn a profit. It's not difficult to make the choice to educate yourself on a subject.
Yes, I want the ZDDP numbers for JGDT40 and yes, anyone can choose to understand them.
Personally, I never make an uneducated choice based on "faith".

I'm totally in for cat throwing.
Been using Royal Purple for 5 years now. I like it because it looks the same going in the filler tube as it does coming out the drain pan, keeping the mystery alive. Is it cleaning or not? Who knows!

It never goes on sale at Wally world

have you had an oil analysis? I don't think we've had a member using RP post one in the GD section.
