$23.88 for Mobil 1 @ Wal-Mart

Mobil 1 is on sale $23.88/5 quarts at Wal-Mart. For fellow DIY'ers!

gerber28 05-09-2015 08:26 AM

Better buy a 55 gal barrel at that price :D

Yes, great price but please be aware that very well qualified M96 experts(not me!) do not recommend Mobil 1 for the M96. Search threads for "JGDT40" for more.

Plenty of threads for oil debate! And plenty of Mobil 1 users as well; enjoy the cheap oil if you're one of them!

Been running Mobil 1 for over ten years and 100,000 miles. Think I'll stick with what the Doktor recommends.

Walmart?

Wal MART?

WALMART in a 986 post on Porsche?

You actually drive your Porsche into a Walmart parking lot?

Someone take that man's man Porsche keys!

Just kidding :D

I drive it to Wally World every once in a while, but I always feel dirty afterword. :p

My car has 90k + and has always had Mobil 1 (full service records). I think I'll stick with it. ;)

Have you changed out your IMS bearing? ;)

The best time to do the IMS is before you have any problems.

Mobile 1 checking in. 0-40W.

The oil debate is one of the things that makes me hate the Internet. You have relatively normal people who will yell and scream at other relatively normal people, neither willing to budge from their positions, neither with any actual evidence of superiority of their position and both with the riteous indignation that their position is the correct one. The result is entrenchment, name calling and butt soreness with nothing gained for the trouble.

That being said Mobil 1 is what is written on my car and that is what I use.

Jamesp 05-10-2015 06:09 AM

Mobile 1 here, but after reading Bob is the oil guy and other posts here it appears there may be better options than the Porsche recommendation. I'm at "good enough" with Mobil 1 for my backyard shade tree mechanic rebuild.

geetee 05-10-2015 06:25 AM

are you sure it's 5qts? Our walmart is 4qts at that price

I was referring to your belief in the "Doktor", who also gave you your infamous IMS...

Which, by the way, has not failed me in over 100,000 miles. I'm pretty satisfied.

The formulation of Mobil 1 has changed significantly since it was originally recommended by Porsche for the M96.
Check the JGDT40 threads and Bitog site for specifics.
Tribology has advanced a lot since the 1990's ,so it is possible to spec an oil more closely to the M96's peculiar needs now than it was 20+ years ago. These criteria become more important as the miles accumulate on an M96 ?
Just compare the specs of the Old vs.New Mobil 1 and JGDT40. Significant differences .

Pdwight 05-10-2015 02:32 PM

Need more than that

How about some hard facts, I use Mobil 1 in my 01S and my E36, Nissan SR and Honda CRV and have had nothing but good luck. Im not being a Mobil 1 fanatic, I believe actually any top leading oil should be fine as long as the engine is in good condition and has been kept serviced....but show some serious facts please.

Dwight
