I can purchase both at Walmart for about $25.00 in a 5 quart jug.
I wish Mobil 1 would offer its extended (good for up to 15,000 miles) oil in either the 10W40 or 15W50 weight.
Since my 99 Boxster has over 233000 miles, if the engine goes bad I'll just part it out and move up to that 996 I been wanting since day one.
Just my two-cents.

Wow 233k congrats on your '99 impressive! Have to ask the question, any IMS replacements done?
I have a 2001 Boxster S Manual 6 speed with 80K and will need to decide at the time I need a new clutch to have it done or not.
Going to my local Walmart for Mobil 1 as soon as I get a chance. I'm also going to be replacing the transmission fluid. Thinking of using a manual pump from the fill opening to remove the old transmission fluid instead of having to remove the bottom cover and the aluminum brace just to get to the drain. Hopefully I can get it all doing it this way. Advise or thoughts if any?

eacallo986,
I purchased the car in 2009 with 104,000 miles. I don't know how many people owned the car before me, but I would guess it has the original IMS.
From what I've read, a car with at least 50,000 miles would have had an IMS failure by now. Personally if I were you, and I am not you, I would not change out my IMS. However, if replacing it eliminates your worries then go ahead and do it.

Personally when I see an oil used in Porsches and Mercs being sold cheap at Wal-Mart back when the price of crude was shooting north fast, I have to wonder where they're cutting costs. Which is one reason I like the idea of oil analysis to see for instance how much ZDDP goes in and how much is still present on the way out.

While I don't argue with what you have to say, the guy has run his car for over 300k without the oil analysis and regardless of whether Mobil 1 went inferior when EVERYONE else did just because they sold competitively at Walmart. I'm tempted to go back to 10W40 like my original owner's manual spec'd. Currently, I run 5W50 and 10K miles. I think I'd like to try 10W40 or 15W40. Just because the currently engines are built for 0W40, doesn't mean my old 99 was...

One time I tried Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W30 and got engine clatter at start up. I immediately changed back to 0W40 within 2 days. No engine clatter at start up with 0W40.

Thanks for sharing your story and info. Always makes me feel good to hear from owners with plenty of mile on their car and have had no problems with the IMS.

probably due to the 10w of the oil. 0w is much thinner and flows much better when cold

My previous P-Car was a 2007 Cayman S. The FIRST scheduled oil change according to the owner's manual and the car's computer was 20K.
