I used to set it anywhere between 8-14, now I am in the 20-26 range. Could there be an issue with the amp, or a setting I need to adjust? I like the lower numbers because the speakers are less likely to making that popping sound at ignition/shutdown and it minimizes any ground loop buzzing.
Also, curious what volume level everyone else is normally around?

I'm definitely not an expert on the subject, but when I had this problem with a home audio system, it was the result of an impedance mismatch. The impedance of my speakers did not match that of my amp, and I needed excessive power to achieve a reasonable volume level.
Just a thought; as I stated, I'm no expert.
My optimum volume level on a CDR220 with a stock system is between 10-15.
