Quick stock oil filter question

I'm doing my first oil change and I'm adding the LN spin on oil filter adapter - I don't have the specialty wrench to remove the stock oil filter housing and obviously don't want to purchase it just for one removal. Is there another way to get that thing off, not really worried about damaging it - will a normal oil filter wrench work?

That tool is a very bad idea, you will crack the reusable plastic housing. This is what you need:

+1 on this. You can get it from Pelican Parts. Careful you don't overtorque the plastic filter housing when you put it back on. Also note the position of the rubber/plastic o ring when you take the filter housing off. Last time I did it I put the o ring at the very top - not the correct position and after retightening it it got squeezed and lost enough oil to show on the driveway when I was driving away.

Careful also about using the correct torque when tightening the drain plug. If you don't have Wayne Dempsey's 101 Projects for your Porsche Boxster, you should get it and it is cheap at $30. First oil change is messy, 2nd not much and the 3rd I expect perfection from myself.

I have seen that same size from walmart, and it has also fit a couple of other vehicles I have done.

He's installing the LN adaptor, therefore not re-using plastic housing. Autozone carries the wrench if you dont wanna damage plastic housing. Otherwise...ChannelLocks

From the oil filter housing? Half a quart is more like it......................

It's probably most pricey to purchase the filter wrench from Porsche sources.

The wrench I use is something I've had for almost 20 years. Have used it on

Mercedes M103 engine
Mercedes M112 engine
Mercedes M272 engine

VW TDI

BMW Oilhead motorcycle

It's pretty common, that is, and pretty much a "German standard." Except for the M103 which was metal and too long ago to remember, the torque figure for ALL listed and for the Boxster has been 25 nm. As I say, "German standard."

Basically the entire German auto industy has converted to canister-type filters from all metal spin-on filters because of the environmental benefits. There is ZERO benefit to the suggested retrofit.

But only 1/2 quart is going to come out of the car when you pull the filter, doing so will not drain the sump, which is what you seem to be implying.

The oil filter is higher than the sump. All you'll get is about 1/2 quart that is contained within the filter, the remaining 8-9 qt will stay in the sump.

Another short answer: Yes. If it doesn't work, then borrow the correct tool from a local friend for the one time removal.

Even though it was a one-time use I stopped by WalMart and snagged the 76mm wrench- it was under $4 including tax. First oil change went perfect, got to use my new lift, propped the oil catch pan up on rolling trash can for perfect height. Didn't drop a drip of oil on the concrete.

Installed LN adapter and mag plug, Joe Gibbs DT40 and K&N oil filter. I've read good stuff about the Napa Golds too. Thx everyone for the feedback.

Wow, I didn't know you could get negative weight oil. It drains uphill!
