The shifting was never extremely smooth but it is worse than ever now and 2nd gear grinds 4 out of every 10 times i throw it in gear. I am forced to have to be extremely careful with 2nd.

Stick with the basics and check your master and slave cylinders before you go changing fluids.
Double de-clutch in the meantime to avoid the crunching.
