I own both a Z3 and a 986 as well as a sport package e46. The two cars are very different! I agree, the inline 6 motor is smooth as silk and extremely durable. Waaaay less fragile than a boxster. My Z3 has a lot of M parts on it as well as a terrific aftermarket exhaust. It handles like a go cart and in Atlanta Blue with M wheels gets a ton of attention. The fit and finish and extras are better than the Porsche.

The sound of the Porsche exhaust is nice and the whine of the engine is better than the Z3. The 986 handles better and there are far fewer in my area! I love both and feel very blessed to drive both cars, which have a lot of fun factor to offer! The BMW is much, much cheaper to own though for sure!

If money is an issue go for the BMW, if standing out in a crowd is more important, go for the Boxster!
