When to replace brake pads

Hi,
I am new to my Boxster. When I am comming to a redlight from say 50 miles per hour I am hearing a Hi pitch squeel when I apply the brakes very lightly. Soon as I push harder it goes away. This does not happen everytime either. It is once in a while. I don't hear it if I am only going 20 miles per hour or so. How do you know when to replace your brake pads. I don't want to bring it to a mechanic becuase they will just tell you that they need to be replaced.
If so Do you have to buy expensive brake pads if you are not racing. I use my car just for casual driving.(Highway,to the store etc).
thanks
