When to replace brake pads

Hi,
I am new to my Boxster. When I am comming to a redlight from say 50 miles per hour I am hearing a Hi pitch squeel when I apply the brakes very lightly. Soon as I push harder it goes away. This does not happen everytime either. It is once in a while. I don't hear it if I am only going 20 miles per hour or so. How do you know when to replace your brake pads. I don't want to bring it to a mechanic becuase they will just tell you that they need to be replaced.
If so Do you have to buy expensive brake pads if you are not racing. I use my car just for casual driving.(Highway,to the store etc).
thanks

If it were me, I would take it to a quality brake shop (NOT MIDAS ETC.) that knows Porsche.

Sounds like you need pads but an inspection is the only real way to know.

Stock pads are fine.

Good luck.

My 99 does it as well. I would not worry about it so much as long as the brake feel is normal. I notice mine does it when its cold outside and as it heats up(longer I drive, outside temp.) it does not do it. As soon as the brake start feeling funny I would take it in.

Bruce,
What stock pads do you recommend that are not that expensive.
thanks

HI,

You want to make sure that you are not applying the Brakes too lightly. Doing so can Glaze the pads and they'll squeal. If it happens, apply the Brakes a little more firmly and you should be fine. Hope this helps...

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99
