A local body man welded on the new unibody piece, "Pulled" the frame a bit and I installed the bolt on stuff. He painted it and guided me thru the maze of regulations Conn. has. Conn requires the vin number of doner cars and receipts for major pieces. To make things easy I bought a non running roller and had a receipt and vin for major parts. It all worked out well and I'm looking forward to driving her tomorrow. Seal gray with 60K She'll look good beside my 01 S. Bruce

Nice Work! CT is certainly a pain

Cleaned and oiled the filter on the CAI. Needed it bad.

New windshield installed. No more pockmarks!

New shifter cable clips, tranny end

Installed TuneRS shifter safety clips on the tranny end of the shifter cables. The bushings were a little warn and had gotten a little sloppy. These clips have made the shifter feel tighter and more precise, along with the renewal of the cable ends at the shifter itself the whole thing feels new.

Getting the factory clips off was the most difficult part of the job. Not a lot of room in there to work. I removed the heat shield and that helped but it is still tight.

Very worthwhile project.

Replaced Bosch starter with Ebay special.

Might regret it but I replaced German engineered Bosch starter (which turned a bit slow and didn't release quick enough so it made a horrible screeching noise) with $75 Ebay Chinese special. On the outside, the Chinese starter looked great. Only thing noticed was slightly smaller diameter power cable from relay to motor.

I read posts where people suggest greasing the old starter but there is no way to get grease into the bendix gear assembly where it is really needed on the Bosch design without breaking the starter. It is a crimp sealed design.

Car now starts faster and doesn't make embarrassing scary sounds.

Job was much easier by accessing lower starter bolt from front access panel with 4 extensions pieced together.

Scariest part was somehow I blew radio fuse in process and when replacing I lost backup camera signal. Messing with wires it magically fixed itself.

Shaved about 20lbs off of her.

I should have cut those brackets off. I thought they would line up. Maybe next time.
I got rid of all the rattling while I was under there. I think the car actually ended up quieter without the secondary cats.

deliriousga 07-31-2016 10:47 AM

Put in a new air/oil separator and secondary air air pump. Now working on replacing the passenger side camshaft position sensor if I can find the darn thing.

PaulE 07-31-2016 04:28 PM

Yesterday I put new front brake discs and rotors on my '03 S. I went with ATE zinc coated discs and Textar pads. I used new caliper bolts but the existing clips and Phillips screws on the discs were fine and I re-used them. Also re-used the wear indicators since the pads had not worn into them. I also cleaned the calipers and touched up a couple of chips on them using some VHT caliper red spray paint that I sprayed onto some cardboard and then used a touchup brush.

I hadn't changed a set of brakes in almost 40 years. The only thing that threw me for a loop was the things glued to the pads that have "pistons" that go within the caliper pistons. But since I was removing the calipers I figured it out!

I was going to buy the Zimmerman discs but Pelican had the ATE discs for 10% off and the price was a bit less to start, so I went with them. The only thing I wasn't expecting was that the disc surfaces were also zinc coated, I expect that will just wear off as the pads bed in. The Textar pads had the same Textar part number on as the original Brembo pads I removed. I got 61,500 miles out of the car's original front pads and rotors. the rears are still going strong. I could have gotten a few more miles out of the fronts, but I'm doing my second DE at Palmer in 4 weeks and needed the new pads for that!

Got the yellow out of my headlights

Took out the litronic headlights I picked up recently and using my Harbor freight DA polisher and some Mothers headlight polish got the headlights looking far better. Now I just need to pick up some clear corners w/o the washers.

Thanks Paul! Amazing what that does for the look! Far better. It'll be interesting to see the light output after dark.

Nice work, Monty. Great result! Those plain clear corners were the most expensive little plastic bits I ever purchased, though.

986ohana just remember to keep your speed down (below 30 mph I think). Your back has no speed limiter and above the limit air resistance can bend your top frame!

Today was one of the 10 best days of the year weather-wise so I did my 60 mile commute with the top down the whole way!

Today

Today I took the axle nuts off my parts car ( 986 ). Six sided 1 1/4 1/2 inch drive and long pipe. Tight but easier then I feared. I want to put CV joints on them and use them on my 01 S. The par ts car is a 98. Are they the same?

Music to my ears

Compact, powered sub installed under the passenger seat. Found one that fits perfectly with zero loss of passenger foot room. (Kenwood KSC-sw11). Also added some rear speakers - 4 JL 3.5's - amazing the difference they make.

While not audiophile quality - really makes a nice sound on those long, straight drives. Then in the curves you can turn it down and listen to her purr!

While not strictly what I did to my Boxster today , I went to visit Woody and have a look at his Boxster graveyard . Truly a site to behold and he took me for a spin in his 3.4 , I didn't know they went so well , I baby mine too much , when I get home it's going to be driven more . The time he spent with me and my family is really appreciated , Woody is a real gentleman , many thanks Woody .

It was on Friday, but I did an oil change. Had 115,100mi at the time of service, and no debris in the oil filter! :D

Well, it was on Saturday, but I removed the CDR 220 from my '00 S, and installed an Alpine CDE-149BT. Can play music from my iPhone via Bluetooth, make and receive calls hands free, use my phone to navigate, and more.

To find parts compatibility/part numbers perform the following tasks online:

1) Go to an online PORSCHE parts dealer/retailer like Circle Porsche Parts , Sunset, or Pelican and enter car year/make/model information (e.g. 1998 PORSCHE Boxster)
2) Type "rear axle" in Search box
and click enter/go.
3) Locate and write down the OEM Porsche part number for the complete axle assembly.
4) Repeat steps with different year/model.
5) Compare the OEM part numbers to determine if they use the same part.
6) You can also email or call any of the retailers above. I've contacted all three and they've proven helpful.

Note different axles for auto and manual transmission and perhaps for 5 and 6 speed manual transmission.

I like the diagram links Circle Porsche Parts provides with most items so you can view and verify the part(s) you plan to purchase and also see the associated parts...CPP also has very competitive prices on genuine Porsche parts and ships USPS to my military address overseas whereas Sunset does not.

Hope this helps...

How does it look can you post some pics? Also do you have an amp and / or door subs?

U R Welcome...
Circle and other retailers may only list "left" or "right" because the same axle assembly fits both sides.

Only need to make sure to compare auto trans with auto trans, 5 speed vs 5 speed and 6speed vs. 6 speed...

Today I took it to the shop that will replace the top, since the rear window broke a couple of weeks ago. I will have it replaced with a glass window top, but they wanted to take a look at it before ordering the replacement.

Today

I had the original rotors and pads replaced and my brake fluid flushed on my 2001 Boxster S (58,000 miles) - went with EBC Redstuff and Centric Premium crossed drilled rotors.

Installed that and did the mod to the top relay that allows it to go up and down while moving and without having to have the ebrake.

Not familiar with this relay...please share. I've modded my 2000 Box for no handbrake and top in motion but still have the regular top controller.

Never mind! I know what it is...did that Monday with a junk yard relay.

Best $30.00 I ever spent

Just replaced the front and rear sway bar bushings. They were on sale at the dealership. That's right, the dealership had a sale on bushings, go figure. Anyway, I followed Neil_b's great how-to and did the complete job in about 2 hours.

Toughest part was getting the old front bushings off. Putting on new ones was actually easier.

Also, I didn't find it necessary to completely remove the plastic skid panel. Removing the front 2-10mm nuts and the 2 front clips was enough to bend the panel down and access the bolts.

The car feels brand new handling wise and the annoying 'clunk' that was occurring at slow speeds over pavement breaks is gone.

Like I said, best $30.00 (CDN BTW) I ever spent.

Had a bad cat so I decided to install Fabspeed sport headers/cats, adds a nice mellow tone and seems to have some extra giddyup
next up will be the Maxflo exhaust

Nice drive in the Heat of AZ

Gave the Boxster a hot trip the last couple days. Drove up to Litchfield Park area west of Phoenix and back. Top down most of the trip except for last 20 miles where I ran into some rain on the way back to Green Valley. Outside temps over 102. Temp gauge never got over what I figured is about 190 deg. Be taking a trip up to Prescott in about a week. Absolutely a fun driving trip. However I did notice my spoiler did not retract when I parked at home. Had to put it down manually.

Understated and very nice. I wish that is all they had done with the new 718's.

Smallblock454 08-13-2016 08:30 PM

Hello,

i've replaced the micro switches in my key fob, because the open / close button didn't work without pressing so heavy that i damaged the rubber key cover.

I used this video tutorial on Youtube to learn how to:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WyyzKFu3nDY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Got the micro switches on eBay. 3 were about 12 Euros.

Problem was that when i desoldered the mircroswitch for the open/close function, one conductor track came off with the switch. Don't know if that was caused by the heavy pressing before or by the desoldeding. Could fix that with a little piece of copper wire. So take care when soldering and desoldering.

The buttons now work with very little pressure. What a really big difference.

Regards, Markus

Agreed. Understated is classic. The 718 could be the most over-badged vehicle out there today. The name on a car shouldn't be so in your face. Subtle trumps brash all day long in my opinion.

I have left enough room for a smaller 'boxster' logo or '986' - but I may just leave its as is.

Installed new frunk (hood) lock actuator 996-511-127-00-M100.
