Worried a little, does that count?

Wife took the car to work and I noticed a penny sized drop of oil on the passenger side. Its pretty clean/clear so I assume its the fresh Castrol. Had the car about 2 months and this is the first it has leaked. We are driving it a lot and I know my wife talks about how great it sounds at 6000rpm!

At some point I am going to get it on jacks and have a look see.

Finally got around to replacing the passenger side door latch assy, been having window drop problems for about 4-5 months and isolated it to a bad circuit on the PCB.

Replacement came from a 911, should I be going faster now??? Added 5 hp?

Lots of spirited driving this weekend. These cars are just so much fun aren't they?

Had some bogging and loss of power at higher revs, went away after taking it easy for a bit. Few mins later CEL came one. Used my durametric to pull a raft of codes. Research on this here forum pointing me to look for a vacuum leak. So this evening I tried to find one. No luck so far. Cleared the codes and was left with a persistent P1117.

Recent (less than 4000 kms) coils and plugs and fuel pump.

Oh well. Something new to dig into. Thanks all in advance for your support!

Purchased the OBDator Mini-OBD2 ELM327 dongle ($14) and it came in today. That combined with the free Torque App and I was quickly able to see my coolant temps.

Note: These OBD dongles are ON at all times. In hindsight, I should have found a model with a power switch (saw one with a button, low profile as well, for $20 on Amazon). They don't drain much power but I hate the idea of installing a parasite.

EDIT: Gonna buy this for $8, its an OBD extension with a switch. I might just ziptie it to that tray thing under the steering column.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R9SKRDM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3N6NMITXL6Z86&psc=1

The standard 986 gauge is pretty accurate on the way up to 180F. Once past 180F its hard to tell whats going on.

Using Torque:
In general with normal country cruising it would hold at 194F. Putting through a neighborhood saw it hit 205F and it quickly came back down to 194F once I was moving at 55.

There is a lot more capability but I am not really sure if I *need* to see anything else. I did put the MPG display up to see that information.

To Do:
- Buy the Torque Pro App for $5, might as well
- Figure our how to display Torque on the Alpine using Android Auto, it can be done!
- Buy the 160F Thermostat, plan to install it down the road

Spent a fantastic weeken at Porsche Festival Alastaro Finland with my son.
Did a day of driving at the track (need new tires...:D), took part to Porsche Slalom race, my son drove some iRacing and we enjoyed fantastic weekend as a spectator for various Porsche racing series as well as Concours d'Elegance event. Plenty of very good looking Porsches from all age groups to see and nice people to chat with

Swapped out the passenger front tuning fork LCA. It is not torqued in place, but I’ll torque both sides at the same time. It went quickly, at least after I found that security lug nut socket. I should have bought four replacement lug nuts when Woody was selling parts. I can never remember where that socket is when needed.

I've been waiting for the two radiator fans to arrive and, in the meantime, have been detailing my fender/wheel wells. I do not own a pressure washer.

A few years ago I read about a "detailer's trick" for wheel wells: Spray the plastic liner with tire foam. I did. Looked great! For a few days. Well... with the wheels off it looked like **************** in there (the wells). That tire foam builds up and it is a pain in the ass to remove. I've decided no more wheel well product... just a wash and rinse.

Anyhow... I've one well left to clean. The others are at 90% clean. Lots of wiping... paintbrushes for the corners and edges... soap and degreaser. I even threw a little paint on the bottom of the struts.

Wife returns home from work last night:

Her: "Why are the rear wheels off the car?"

Me: "C'mon out and I'll show you"

Me, showing her the remaining dirty well: "What do you see?"

Her: "What am I supposed to see?"

Me: "Take a look. What do you see here (motioning to dirty ****************ty area) and here (more dirty ****************ty area)?"

Her: "Honey, I don't see anything. What am I supposed to be seeing?"

Me, becoming alarmed at her blindness): "Do you see all that nasty ****************? That white crap?"

Her: "OK. That means nothing to me".

Me, showing her the glistening silver and shiny black in the three clean wells: "Look at that (showing her the clean) and now look at that (showing her the ****************show well)".

Her: "That's what you've been working on? No one is going bend down to see that".

While in the wells I did note a few things that are going to require attention. The boot to the inside rear passenger axle is split. Two pieces. I'm venturing to guess (I know) that soon I'll be needing a couple of axles.

Cheers!

For me at least ;) Crazy money to spend on a 986 but I can’t wait to break it in and turn it loose. Definitely should be near one of a kind.

Oh, you don’t have to talk to me about spending crazy money on a 986.......reupholstered seats, new top, both bumper covers resprayed, etc, etc, etc. and mine is only a 2.7, and one with 158,000 miles at that. LOL. The things we do for love!

Love the SE cars, and yours should be a 911 beater.

Overthinking is what I do best!

Been mulling what tire sizes to get for my new-to-me Cayman S II 18" wheels to swap out my 17" wheels on a 2001 Base.

Just ordered these sizes:
215/45/18
245/40/18

They are .6" and .7" inches larger in diameter than my current tires. 25.7" is just inside the 3% rule.

Why did I choose these over the more accepted 225/255 setup? Well, going from 17s to 18s I liked the extra sidewall height. I also like the little longer gearing for high speed cruising. With the lighter wheel/tire combo in the rear maybe the torque loss due to gearing will even out.

Pics/Review to follow next week. Hopefully the rears will not hit the fender during high loads... we shall see!

Took my motorbike on a Boxster road reconnaissance run.
Hwy 1 from Hope to Cache Creek is one nice nice run. It's gonna be fun in the Boxster next time.

Not sure if that counts for this thread though........:)

Went to a cars and coffee this morning with a turnout of close to 50 Porsche’s and 25 or so Italian and other exotics. The highlight was 3 (count em 3) GT3’s, a new Spyder, half a dozen 911 turbos of various vintages and a host of Ferrari’s. I’d like to upload som pic but I’m on an iPad and, you know.

PS One of the GT3 was an RS.

Started the O2 sensor swaps. I'm doing all 4. They are seized in there pretty good. So ima gonna let them soak on PB Blaster overnight. The garage smells of persuasion and progress :)

Yes, I got the O2 sensors removal socket. Anyone got any other tips?

The O2 sensor socket may flare out and round out the sensor if the sensor is really stuck. Cut the wires and use a deep-well socket or a 7/8" box wrench, if you have room. Use the O2 sensor socket when you install the new ones.

An impact helps or tap the wrench with a hammer to shock the threads. For extremely stubborn one use a torch to heat them up.

Use COPPER anti-seize on the new ones not silver.

Good luck.

Inspected the my 2001 Boxster 2.7 after a good track day and found out that front brake calipers shows 'some' wear and needs attention.

Both images shows some concern on the brake piston boot... Circled the issue location with red.

What is opinion here, can I repair the brake pistons with new boots (and maybe brake pistons if needed to) or is there bigger issue to deal with (like machining work etc)?

I'd like to manage to keep these calipers if the repair is rather simple, but if there is larger issue to deal, I'll try to find used S-model brake calipers to replace these with.

I've tried re boring calipers, master, and slave cylinders... never really had much luck. they always seem to weep when I'm done. I havent even attempted to rebuild any in years, just get a new one.

Looks like you don't need any re-boring or replacement of pistons, just some boots. Thats easy, just buy some boots and put them on with a hook and pick. You could find Porsche parts but I'm sure this is not the only car to use these brakes (hint).

Zzorro 09-13-2020 04:46 PM

I rebuilt my calipers. New seals and boots from Porsche (they were cheap). It wasnt difficult and have not had issues since. But I have not done track stuff with it. Just spirited driving. At that time I had 170k kms on the Odometer.

I needed to replace brake fluid anyways (had a close call with old fluid!). So that precipitated into a caliper rebuild just to be sure I covered all the bases. Try that 1st before you replace calipers etc. Good luck!

Thank you both for a good advice.
I'll try to avoid the re-boring these as well (some 30 years ago have done it and it was not so good result as I hoped for...).
Current plan is to paint the calipers, flush the brake fluid, swap the new seals and boots during this upcoming winter the latest.

You'll know better once you're in there if new calipers are needed. If no water has migrated into the cylinder and there's not rust or pitting and it cleans up well, new seals and boots will be all you need.

You may have a little rust and pitting along the outer edge (outside of where the seal rides) and you'll still be ok. Just clean it off real good so you won't damage the new seal when you insert it.

Great, thanks Piper fro detailed heads up. I'll report back when I get to open these after the driving for this season is done or some issues come up to force the car to be placed for sleep for the winter...

Painted my center caps, using the DIY on this forum. Looks great ! Took about two hours total, but had to take breaks...These things have lots of small details ! Did gold, red, then black touch-ups with a toothpick. Finished with 4 coats of glossy clear, applied 20 minutes apart.
