Replaced broken Upper Dipstick Tube. Removing the J-Tube helps with access.
I thought the trunk end "clipped" into the dipstick hole, but actually, you put tension on it when the rubber grommet is positioned in the firewall. |
Replaced trunk lock actuator. The old one was acting wonky; It would pull the lock open, but on subsequent presses of the fob, it would not move all the way, then moved less and less. If I let it cool off, it would work.
Got a pre-owned part for $26 shipped. Better than $100. Works like a champ. My car has the Aero Kit, so the latch is different than some pics I've seen... http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1564600263.jpg Didn't have an 11mm, and the nut was spinning... http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1564600425.jpg Removed the cover http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1564600455.jpg Allen screws http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1564600502.jpg |
Replaced the front speakers in the dash . Bought Cerwin Vega H740's online for $40.00 shipped to my door . Modified the factory mounts they fit and sound great ! Old one's literally fell apart when I touched them . Next up replace all four rotors and pads .

I just bought dash and door speakers and an amp from Crutchfield today to upgrade the audio.
Recently replaced the front rotors and made this DIY. https://youtu.be/2UpNTa90k2U |
Last weekend did new rotors and pads in all four corners. Just got two used dash speakers to disassemble and install a couple pioneer 4" speakers. Did those today and tomorrow while its raining doing the install and replacing door speakers and running new wiring to the trunk for a upgraded amp.

I got my car back from the shop, again, after the clutch hydraulic failure. It turns out the hydraulic line burst/broke while I was driving. The shop replaced the line with a new one, but the connections are now different at the slave cylinder... so I have a new one of those as well. The repairs didn't take long, but they left some air in the system, I believe, so the clutch wasn't engaging or disengaging in the right position (way too low). I took it back in and they flushed the system. Now it feels right again. Alles gut.

Replace my 11/12 dated battery. Pep Boys has 25% off batteries if you buy online and pick up in store.

I finally got around to cleaning all the goo off the two knobs of my CDR 23 radio with denatured alcohol. The power/volume button wasn't too bad since I use it more often, but they both needed it. Now they are clean and look great!
I also installed the Track Addict app on my iPhone, bought a 10 ft iPhone lightning cable, a Veepeak OBD II BLE Scanner and some additional RAM Mount hardware. I can now mount my iPhone on my Brey-Krause rollbar extension and take videos at HPDE's. I made a test video driving around my neighborhood and it came out pretty good. The Veepeak was easy to link to the iPhone and to Track Addict. Track Addict intuits what gear you are in for the display and it has options to adjust it up and down, I'm still tweaking that to see what works best. Using the camera on the front of the iPhone the vibration from the motion stability is eliminated. It's not high tech but for less than $100 for everything I can make some simple track videos and I'm happy. I went with Track Addict rather than Harry's Lap Timer as it was cheaper and from my research it seemed Track Addict was easier to use the GPS outside of racetracks, so I can use it at autocrosses if I do any of those. The Veepeak also works as an OBD scanner and can supposedly clear codes with an OBD scanner app that I installed on my phone. I;ll leave the code investigation and clearing to my shop though! |
Finally got to the Porsche dealership and had my new key fob programmed for my car. New key fob cost me $155.53 and programming it cost me $153.27 for a cost of $308.80 in total.

Water pump and belt.

I spent the day driving at Watkins Glen, the first day of three. There is a lot to learn here, lots more changes in n elevation than the other tracks I have driven.

replaced broken button on key-fob. Ah, the luxury of unlocking the car before betting to it.
|
Replaced broken brass retaining nuts for the roof latch with steel rivet nuts. Pretty easy, though I didn't get all of the old pieces out. Now I can put the top up again, hope I don't have annoying rattling going on...

Got it just about where it needs to be based on the BlackStone report. So far, so good...

I'm a DIYer for a lot of things, but putting on a new top makes me uneasy. |

Silver Side Engine Compartment Louvres
Not a really big deal, but I do believe that, for a dark colored car, painting these louvres silver makes the car look better than does their OEM black color.

Fixed blown subwoofer
Well my son was visiting and during our cruise was showing off my stereo, when I go do you smell that 😱burning smell. Well toasted the pioneer sub woofer in my cabriolet footwell box. I replaced it with an 8” kicker with a higher rms rating. Also took time to clean the carpeting on it.

I'm taking the car to my first HPDE next weekend so I was going through it to make sure it was good to go.
I checked for play in the waterpump, but it was pretty solid and spun well, but did find that the serpentine belt was cracked and had a tear in one spot. I had a belt laying around as I've been prepping for the water pump and motor mount job, so I just threw it on. Don't have enough time to change the water pump and motor mount yet though. Second on the list today was to put in GT3 brake ducts and check my brakes. Third, I made sure all my wheels were properly torqued to 96ft lbs. Next is a good clean this week before the track. I'm beyond excited! |

Looks really good! Matches the Boxster text and wheels perfectly! |

I like the 987 wheels on the ocean blue metallic (at least that's what I think the colour is). I have the same colour. Going to see about chasing down a set myself. Painted ducts look good. |

The very idea of this project makes me twitchy. My roof is starting to show its age and when the time comes to replace it, I’m daunted by the DIY project. I’ve done a ton of suspension work and a bit of engine work, but it seems like getting the top to stretch properly and look nice and taught is a huge chore. How long did your install take, and did you run into any surprises, challenges, etc.? Looks like a job very well done, so kudos. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Also, fuel pump ordered and will install this weekend. Been getting periodic bogging/power loss, no engine codes. It's like someone shut off the fuel. Number of great posts on here helped me troubleshoot this issue. Thanks all. |

My problem was I had, as the photos show, do the work in the driveway which meant I was dependent on the weather. But way before the actually install I researched and read anything I could get my hands on as how other people did it, tool, materials and adhesives, tricks, photos and illustrations, Boxster service manuals, Pelican 101 Projects, etc. Instructions only go so far you have to be in the mindset-doing the work to figure it all out.If you read that someone did it over a weekend don't believe it! I would have to say that it took me a full week. If your in a garage, it will obviously take you less. Some of my issues were parts orientation, especially with the plastic "scissors". Photo's didn't quite show how they needed to be placed or fit together. Also, have new sets on hand for both sides with extra pins. Some parts may need to be replaced, you won't know till you take the roof off. [Thank g-d for Pelican overnight!]. You will be dealing with small parts, in tight fit, in awkward places. Plan to make sure you cover all holes and areas where you could easily lose small parts! I put a sheet of thick white paper under where I was working so if I dropped something [which I did repeatedly] I could retrieve it easily. Get one of those extendable magnetic retrieval tools. Thin fingers helps. Plenty of light! Stretching the material wasn't really a problem. If you plan how your going to work the installation it will come out clean and tight. From reading and my own experience it seems that each install has differences. What was necessary for someone to do may not be for you. I try to do as much work on my 99 Boxster as I can, as far as maintenance and parts replacement. Some things like frame and suspension, a well as major engine stuff are beyond me. Nervousness, Anxiety, Trepidation YOU BET! But if you stick with it [and have grit] it will get done. And, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing, and showing, a beautiful new roof. And having the extra $$$ in your pocket is certainly an incentive! [Upgrade the stereo?] Good Luck! |

Installed a new VDO/Siemens Fuel Pump. 170k kms. It was time. About 1 hour to get it done. Lots of great posts on here to make it easy, along with the 101 projects book. Thanks again all!
Also, yesterday I got an excellent deal on some near new 18" Victor Equipment Lemans, mirror lip, black face rims. 8" wide fronts and 9.5" wide rears. Couldn't say no. On the hunt for some tires now. That should dress up the car nicely. Still have suspension refresh work planned. Hunting for some time to do that......... |
I changed the dash and door speakers in my 04s. Sounds like new.
|
What did you use and where did you source them from?

Reinstalled my splitter and finally got my TAILIGHTS!! 😁
