I think you need to get a layer of metal off so a decent polishing compound can deep penetrate and take off the rest of the oxidation, clean, and polish. If you are looking at doing it once and want it to look good again for many years.... that's the only way.

If you do go for the commercial polishing material onto some ten year old SS... buy a big bottle because chances are you'll be doing the same routine every month
