Polishing exhaust tip

Was wondering about the best way to clean and polish the exhaust tip on 2001 base model. My assumption is that the tip is stainless.

Some have claimed success doing it. I haven't had any. Do a search as there have been several discussions about this.

Brasso and a softer steel wool pad. You'll be goog to go.

Johnny Danger 02-12-2012 08:14 AM

Nevr-Dull can do a nice job .

You guys sounds just like my wife and her friends in a cosmetic store... miracle products ;) hhehe

Sailing; "wet" sand with a #600 until the bear metal shows up again, then polish/buff this with a metal polishing compound (bar type) until it shines evenly, then apply this whatever product y9ou think smells better.... as long as it states that it have protection additives.

Not many other ways really....

Simichrome polish.

I think you need to get a layer of metal off so a decent polishing compound can deep penetrate and take off the rest of the oxidation, clean, and polish. If you are looking at doing it once and want it to look good again for many years.... that's the only way.

If you do go for the commercial polishing material onto some ten year old SS... buy a big bottle because chances are you'll be doing the same routine every month ;)

Thanks guys. Was mostly concerned with the type of metal first then how to attack it. I have had pretty good luck on the stainless steel on my sailboat using a product called "Flutz" so may try that after some good scrubbing and wet sanding as I have a bit on hand. If that doesn't work I will give one of the other products mentioned a shot>

Just didn't want to start out with good intentions and make things worse.

Don't know about the other products mentioned here but Flitz is awesome. You'll have to use high speed to bring them back. If done right they should come out awesome. Check out the last entry in my thread http://986forum.com/forums/show-tell-gallery/32733-shine-muffler.html

You'll need to use something on the end of a drill for the speed needed.

Good luck!

I used Blue Magic metal polish. Don't forget, you can remove the exhaust tips and bring them in your house and polish them while watching TV or if you have a polishing wheel you can buff them out on your work bench. Either way, once they're polished it only takes seconds to re-buff the shine if they get dingy and dirty.

You'll love the results, seeing those two round polished tips from the back adds that extra touch of class to the rear. Good luck.

In what world? I've only owned two Boxsters, and neither come off. Maybe it's a specific year thing.

Jaxonalden 02-13-2012 12:25 PM

I have an '04 S with dual rolled tipped exhaust tips. The tips can be removed by loosening a bolt on the bottom that pinch fits them to the muffler. It's just not limited to those, the 550 and Sport is the same way.

BTW, they're stainless steel and polish up like chrome!!

Any instructions on how to remove just the muffler tip and not the entire exhaust?

I did mine which are stainless a while back and they still look the same today. My bench grinder wire wheel did the job.

I have a chrome sport exhaust tip, I had good success with Mother's Chrome polish and steel wool.

I use Simichrome polish on the exhaust tips on my 2001 S. Works great.

Only some of the later model mufflers have removable tips. There's just a bolt on the bottom that loosens to unclamp it. Most of the tips are welded on.
I remember when Chuck W polished an entire PSE. Lots of pictures in several different threads.

Buy a 2003 or newer muffler
