Someone asked me if the ACLU or similar type of organization is involved in defending folks. The answer is it's the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) located in San Francisco.

They work on a pro bono basis and have more asks for help than they can handle; in part because of all the Righthaven suits. This means they try to take the more promising ones that can hopefully set precedents.

Unfortunately their case load was full so I was referred by the EFF to a group of intellectual property gurus - Ridder, Costa, and Johnstone, who served as my attorneys.

They took my case because I was willing to fight and they thought I had some compelling arguments. Reality set in when Righthaven brought in a "new set" of lawyers who indicated they were going to be just as obstinate as I was. Many legal arguments & counterarguments were traded - it became clear that Righthaven wanted to have a precedent case as well - and they'd have been happy to have it been my case. Also note my previous post about additional liability to others being potentially dragged into this.

After toting up the figures to go all the way to the 9th circuit court I decided I had better settle.

Just heard from the lawyers that since both parties signed the settlement papers that Righthaven has formally dismissed the case against 986forum and myself in Nevada federal court.

BTW - have to throw a bit of politics in this - I asked if I should contact my state rep and senator for help, since I'm a taxpayer.

Answer: Absolutely not - they always stay away from Federal cases .....

The forum Paypal address is: 986forum1@comcast.net

Bump - Payment sent - included Paypal address in the title because it took me awhile to find it in the thread. Hopefully that helps others.

Thanks again for a great site!

Sorry this has happened to you guys.

I’ve always wondered why this Forum never collected a fee, many on the web do. You are just as deserving.

Interesting that none of the site sponsors have stepped up yet. Where's Jake and others??

As unfortunate as this event has been, just remember the money you saved from the Red Line Water Wetter debacle and fraud perpetrated a few years ago, and keep everything in perspective. Karma? That could have really brought you guys down. You guys settle that one pretty well, by banning MNBoxster, aka Jim, aka Andy, and letting him come back as Lil Bastard. That was a close one.

not to say they should or should not, have or have not... but they already support the site financially by the ads they purchase - i am assuming. my opinion of them does not change whether they have donated or not.

(just my .83-cents adjusted for inflation)

I don't think there's any reason for any member - or sponsor (IMO) to feel compelled to post up that they have helped. It's important for those involved to feel free to contribute as they are able and feel good about. The forum admin.s know who has done what and that's what matters.

Very disappointing to read of such cynical behaviour, will try to remember to send a few bucks over when my invoices get paid later in the month.

One query I have regards making the site bigger and stronger, why not let non-members view forum posts / threads? Surely this would increase traffic immensely. Plenty of forums do allow non members to read most if not all the forum. What's the downside?
