Constant power to stereo

I have fitted a double DIN aftermarket DVD/GPS system.
The only problem is I have switched power which only comes on when the ignition is on. I do not know how to power the stereo direct from the battery. Every time I turn the car off, the radio presets disappera nd i have to re tune stations and reset my GPS.

Can anyone advise how to get constant power to the stereo?

Will this effect battery life?

Thanks

i don't know which model Boxster you have.
In my 2002 there is behind the center console a 4 prong outlet which has non-switched power, switched power and ground.
This was originally there to connect mobile phones
Do a little search on the forum and you should find pictures etc.

+1 on using the phone connector. The constant +12v you need is lurking right there under the lower console.

If for some reason you don't have the phone connector, there's a pass-through between the cabin and the battery compartment in the footwell (it's on the driver's side on my left-drive car). It's easy to pull power directly from the battery, through the rubber grommet, and into the center console.

If you run a lead to the battery, remember to include an inline fuse as close to the battery as possible.

There are also empty fuse slots for connections.

As Chris said, the phone cable has switched +12 VDC, unswitched +12, mute and ground. Just pull the carpeted panel by your right leg gently back and down to access.

I bought a connector from Becker so I would not have to spice into the harness.

While you are in there it is a good time to hardwire your radar detector and/or 12 VDC garage door opener. I just left the detector there and it works fine.

Why constant power? It will run down the battery.
