+1 on keeping the spare in the car. Going through uncharted territory could really SUCK with a flat tire and no spare, 70 miles from noware. If you hear banjo's playing run like Hell or you could get "Ned beaty'd". There are a lot of deserted roads through places like deserts and mountains. Miles of no cell phone coverage I just wouldn't chance it. I went from San fran to Ohio without incident, but I still wouldn't chance it. I kept a survival kit of the following.

1.) 2 quarts of oil
2.) fix a flat
3.) 2 gallons of water and a bunch of trail mix in my family size cooler
4.) back pack with 2liter camel back dehydration
5.) My Glock 30 45 cal tucked under the passenger seat.
6.) Small tool kit a various sizes and Duct tape!!
