I've driven cross country a dozen times, including a few trips to Alaska and I've only experienced a flat tire once. But that one flat had a hole on the side wall so a can of fix-a-flat would have left me stranded if I didn't have a spare. I was also atleast 70 miles from the nearest town.

Definitely keep the spare tire. You never know if you're going to have a side wall puncture or a blow out.
