I would suggest getting the car fax AND the PPI. The car fax can actually catch funny business with title issues and provides an ownership history that is generally reliable.
They are of no value on the condition of the car, as has been pointed out.

PS-Autocheck is a bit better on the title search side of things and I think costs less to run.
