best SS Kit ????(B&M, Schnell, Evo...)
I have been researching about SS kit and I can't come up with the best kit.
It seems like in whatever brand, some people have problems with it.
Is it basically hit or miss? no matter what brand you get, if you are lucky, you'll be happy with it, if not, then you are screwed?
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

The mechanics are very simple in these kits. I bought the 50 dollar B&M clone off ebay and love it.
It is my guess that problems can be traced back to the shift cable installation. It took some tweaking to make mine shift perfectly.

How did you miss install the shift cable installation? Did you not mark the location when removed?

The short shift kits on these cars are a thing of preference. Most(not all) of the people who install them love them. I for one love it. The ones who don't like them do not like the notchiness. The shift kits make the throws precise,in my opinoin,how the car should have been from the factory. It can be reversed but you have to drop around $400 or so on a whole new shift assembly. I bet you can make some of that back by selling the old assembly w/ the short shift kit to someone else though.
Don't pay $200 for one,get the eBay clone from a2rinc. There are minor differences but not much.

Mine didn't work when I went back to the cable locations of the OEM linkage. I had to do a readjustment after the SSK install.

You can just put the old shifter back with the new bushings and not spend an extra penny.

i bet all of them are made in the same place, just painted diff colors and got diff names.
i like the notchy feel, stok is just too 80s bmw kinda throw, all over the place

Hmm that interesting. I talked to someone who didn't like it and they said they had to buy a whole new OEM shifter assembly to reverse it.

I have a NSX with short shift and it's very notchy, some people call it "gated position" which I like. Is it similar to what you guys are describing? If that's the case, then I'll definitely get a SS kit.

I recently installed the Schnell SS. Should have done it sooner. I highly recommend the product.

I didn't miss install the shift cables. I marked it and it shifted, but it was not smooth. When it was all said and done, I was not in the same exact locations with the new shifter. It wasn't far off, so marking it is definetly a start, but it is not always exact.
I was saying that I bet a lot of people with problems did not tweak the cable connections. There is not much else to go wrong.

+1 pn the Scnell. The Top speed (eBay) is a nearly exact copy of the B & M. Buy one of the cheaper ones. Don't waste money on shifters. Waste money on wheels.

i think its that people dont like the feel of it, a little harder to shift, little more effort.
its not about the actual install.

+1 on the B&M. I, too, like the notchiness but appreciate the short, precise throw. When I drive other 986/996 autos, I'm surprised at the factory shifter since I'm used to mine.

its like 40 bux, thats not even enough for some valve stem covers lol.
it is by far the best upgrade to a car, since you use it allll the time.

It's funny, the price of the SS kit is less than a tank of gas right now and it honestly is the best possible thing I could have done for joy of driving.
Dj, I think der Geist was saying, "do not waste money on the expensive ones, the cheap ones are just as good. Use the saved cash for wheels" In about 1/3 the words.

The cheap ebay short shifters have quality control issues. The bushings aren't the same size. It may 'fit', but not correctly. There is a reason why they're cheap.
If you want a quality fit, go with the B&M short shifter, since they are the ones that OEM the Porsche short shifter. I've also heard postive things about the Schnell shifter as well.

I have the BM kit, works great for over 3 years now.
