By far its biggest use is in identifying which parts are in the car. We cannot order replacement parts from a dealer for
any car without the last 8 digits of the VIN. the factory keeps updating the cars during the model year, and parts change, so without the VIN, you may have to choose from 3 or 4 parts that are not interchangeable, and often not returnable.
