I had that happen on my 2000S the first time I changed it. I went back to NAPA and bought the version for the newer car (2002 or 03) and it fit perfect.
IIRC, the one I thought would fit was a all black and the one that fit was mostly white with one side black. I'm sorry I don't recall the part numbers.
I figure that a PO might have had the whole assembly replaced at some point.
