Oh, it's the throttle body's actuator then. Probably you messed with its cable while working around the pump, shorted somehow or similar. Inspect the wiring harness and all cables in the surroundings...

It seems fuse B8 is for the alarm, ECU and Tiptronic control. Can the humming be coming from the idle control valve oscillating between two positions? And it just stops because you disconnect the DME?

Yeah, can be anything, but at least you'll know what will be put in the car, so no surprises. I hope it turns out as a good deal! I'm also in the Bay, I might see you around

This sounds a bit odd to me. 99 Boxsters come with the dual row bearing which is usually totally fine at this mileage. The grittiness may be due to the extraction procedure. But then the noise must...

I think overcooling the transmission may reduce its lifetime and probably it will take longer for it to warm up. I sold my Tip last year, but I remember the shifting became significantly smoother...

No worries, I just wanted to point out that these are different parts so the OP won't get confused. You can replace only the solenoid when it fails, it's easy to test, replace and relatively cheap....

The picture is showing the variocam actuator, not the solenoid. Both can fail and both will throw codes but different ones. Both will require pulling the head cover.

Yeah, it takes a lot longer than one would think.. Especially if you get lost in the details. What are those coated bearings like?

Replacement IMS and fitting new bearing

This car had the single-row, small bearing, which is the weakest of them all. Although it's still perfect and shows no wear, I didn't want to just leave it as is.

Luckily I have a few more IMSs...

Interesting. To me it sounds like it's related to the power steering. Does it persist when you do this after turning the engine off? If not, do you have fluid in the reservoir?

I think the superficial layer of the bearing material is not really ferrous and comes in flakes. It's more likely that one of the chain pads is worn down and disintegrated and the chain runs on metal...

No problem. Not sure which O-rings JFP suggested, I meant the internal O-ring within the variocam unit that disintegrates over time scattering green rubber debris all around the engine. If you...

Apart from the pads, since now you have good access to these parts, I would carefully inspect the variocam units for rubber debris coming from the internal O-rings. They tend to fail in cars been...

Yep, worn cam tensioners is a typical failure, one of my previous Porsches had to be rebuilt for the same reason, the tensioner wore off, fell apart, then the chain jumped over one or more teeth.

Exactly how my engine fell apart. It's kind of off topic, because these engines (mine at least) did not get an AT number.

On the other hand, I have an AT engine from a Boxster S which has the...
