				The Current Cayman Market

IMHO, the buyer's market for a used Cayman is especially HOT right now.
In Dallas, and in other major metropolitan areas like Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, LA, etc., asking prices for early Caymans are very attractive; and within the range of a good 986 a few years ago.

For between $15K-$25K, one can pick up a pristine example of the marque, MY06-MY08, in both base and "S" configuration.

My guess is that the factory dealers are offering such low trade-in values that private owners are willing to part with their Caymans at very reasonable prices. And I'm referring to excellent examples with full records that can pass a PPI without breaking a sweat.

The 986 is a GREAT car; I LOVE my Boxster, but after driving my wife's 987 Cayman a few times, I realize that the Cayman is not just a Boxster tintop.

Just sayin'..............

These cars are old enough were dealers in general don't want them on their lot and just send them to auction. Add to this that sports cars in general are not in fashion and prices are finally dropping. It guys like us that appreciate these cars that keep the prices as high as they are. What 10 year old car is still worth this kind of money?

Every once in a while I scan the market for 2009 Caymans, maybe a nice 2009 base Cayman with manual or even pdk, the prices are coming down for sure.

TO - funny you should bring this up. I've been noticing the same thing the past few months. An early Cayman S is getting awfully darn tempting...

I had an '08S for about a year and sold it last summer. It was hard to get a decent price for it. Oddly enough it seems that Boxsters of similar vintage are more expensive than Caymans (up here anyway) even though they were cheaper initially.

boxsters hit a broader market - sports car, convertible, daily driver, entry-level porsche, track car (more racing support than for a cayman). caymans hit a much narrower market and are in direct competition with the 911 (esp the 996) in that market.

Yes that was my theory. The fact that Boxsters are more money is annoying now that I'm shopping for a Boxster However I am seeing that Boxsters aren't moving too quickly anywhere. Perhaps its the economy, perhaps the reputation on IMS, who knows.

ps The Cayman S is very capable but I just didn't fall in love with it

You are correct, sir, (except one you linked is tiptronic) and I've been taking note too of trend. Been toying w/ picking up a [mostly] dedicated DE beast and 987C have hit the radar screen in recent months. Some great values out there... as also is true w/ 996s right now...

Indeed. I'm still kicking myself for not snagging this cherry '99 that I test drove a few months ago. One owner, mint condition, 50K original miles. Asking price $18,500.

I need a bigger garage.

Just sayin'...........

True, although many argue the Cayman is the better car due to a better balance with the mid engine. As well, many car people argue the Cayman is much more than just a Boxster with a tin roof. Need to try one of these some day.
