DME incommunicado
After an engine swap (old one had no oil and trashed tensioners) I get it started, but it runs poorly and quits.
I have codes 0650 and 9110.
I had it at a shop where they say the DME is dead. The tech who flashed the 996 tune says that's unlikely.
So I'm posting here in hopes someone has had this situation and can provide guidance.
The shop did check the wiring and said it's ok.
I've got it scheduled for a specialist shop next week but it's 250 miles away and I would certainly like to avoid a tow like that!

I don't know if it would help (in time), but I could send a 7.2 DME, key fob, and M535 box if you want to check it by swapping out the set. I forget what year car you have. Buy it or borrow it....
I've been surprised how often grounds are overlooked. There is a grounding point to the right of the DME mount (if you are facing forward) and the main engine ground from the lower starter bolt to the SAI blower bracket.

These DMEs VERY rarely fail. What is this shop using to get the fault codes?

You got the engine running, safe to eliminate the DME for the moment.
From the symptoms, it sounds like you have a vacuum leak and/or everything isn't hooked up correctly or not connected. Happens to the best of us when replacing or dropping an engine. Go over every connector/sensor, vacuum line, etc.

78F350: may take you up on that!
Q-man; checked on Durametric here, and not sure what the shop used but they got the same codes.
Grounds are good.
Don't get indications of vacuum leaks, but haven't smoked it.
Thanks!

What year is the car?
Car year can be important when it comes to P-codes.
Any and all mods?=== important info for diagnostics!!!
If your P0650 is for the check engine light, then that is most commonly a wiring issue, bad ground, or a burned out bulb.
Your P9110 is that possibly a mis-type on your part?
I find no P9110 code info.

99, 74mm TB with 996 ROW tune.
Continuity good to bulb, and good bulb.
9110 is a Porsche code.

Do you know what the 9110 code is for?
So the Check engine light.
Does the light stay on all the time?
Or Does it not come on for a few seconds when first turning key to the on position?

I couldn't find anything in the FSM with that code. JFP may chime in or you can send him a PM, he may know

I couldn't find anything either.
I suspect it may be a dash pod circuit code.
But I have no way to confirm that.

I've been all through this for a month. 9110 is a problem with the DME, whether bad or just the connection.
I've communicated with JFP on this and it's now going to a Porsche shop.
I was just posting to see if anyone else had a similar problem and how they resolved it.
Thanks, though.

Thanks for the feedback on that code.
So in my brain the 9110 DME issue could be causing the 0650 code for the CEL light.
But that is just speculation.
The very few ECU issues I have come across have been bad grounds.
All on other makes of cars none on a Porsche.
Have not come across one that just decided to fail out of the blue.
Or things like a friend chipping his Ford truck that wiped the ECU clean.
He had to tow the truck to the dealer to get the ECU re flashed.
I am interested in what your final outcome is.
Please keep us posted.

Late to the party but I have a question - why did you do a 996 tune? The 996 maps rely on a 3.25" MAF housing. If this was not done during your TB upsizing, that is likely the source of your ignition/idle issues. Going out in a limb here but the dme may be throwing a code on itself saying that it can't compute the situation. That's total speculation though, but I don't see a coincidence that the "dme fried" code is coming up after a flash.

Gotcha. That airbox does have the larger maf housing. Sorry if I missed it earlier.
The only other thing that I can think of is if the me versions are wrong - for example, flashing a post 2002 996 tune to a pre 2002 dme or vice versa (I'm pretty sure off the top of my head that's when they switched to 7.8). What year is your car and the donor motor? I'm sure you matched all that up before the swap, but maybe your tuner didn't know that detail?
One other thought - it may be worth asking the guy who did your flash if he flashed the entire dme or just the engine maps. If he flashed the entire dme, you may want to try to revert to your original dme and then flash ONLY the 996 maps. That leaves all the other programming in place (I. E. Instrument cluster, HVAC, etc).
