DME incommunicado

After an engine swap (old one had no oil and trashed tensioners) I get it started, but it runs poorly and quits.
I have codes 0650 and 9110.
I had it at a shop where they say the DME is dead. The tech who flashed the 996 tune says that's unlikely.
So I'm posting here in hopes someone has had this situation and can provide guidance.
The shop did check the wiring and said it's ok.
I've got it scheduled for a specialist shop next week but it's 250 miles away and I would certainly like to avoid a tow like that!
