I was never able to get a chance to put the 986 and 987 struts side by side to measure because another difference I believe is where the sway bar link upper bolt hole goes. I'll see if I can find the PM or thread, someone else tried moving the 987 carrier to a 986 and had to saw part of the top off to get the strut to sit in the right range.
