whine after starting

my 2000 boxster runs great but in the cold weather it ha a very loud whine when it starts up-sounds like a high pitched buzz saw- that goes away completely in 10-2- seconds. It does not do it in warm weather or if the car has been warmed up and restarted in cold weather. It has been doing it for a few winters-no real change.

Maybe starter solenoid sticking? This can be cleaned and lubricated as a DIY.

Doesn't sound like starter

10 seconds would be a really long time for a starter to hang. Lasts more like half a second to a full second. Starter also grinds when warm too.

Can you record sound and post it on Youtube?

Here is example of starter grinding when it doesn't disengage quickly enough.

my starter made a sound like a "turkey call" some mornings when i starter it up cold. I replaced with a new starter. took about an hour. Starter cost me just over $100 off ebay. works great now. no turkey call at startup any more.
