whine after starting
my 2000 boxster runs great but in the cold weather it ha a very loud whine when it starts up-sounds like a high pitched buzz saw- that goes away completely in 10-2- seconds. It does not do it in warm weather or if the car has been warmed up and restarted in cold weather. It has been doing it for a few winters-no real change.

Maybe starter solenoid sticking? This can be cleaned and lubricated as a DIY.

SAI fan with bad bearings?

buddy had this on his. $1000 later it was fixed, new starter...

Doesn't sound like starter
10 seconds would be a really long time for a starter to hang. Lasts more like half a second to a full second. Starter also grinds when warm too.
Can you record sound and post it on Youtube? Here is example of starter grinding when it doesn't disengage quickly enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6ml7rDvA7U |
I am betting it is the SAI.

my starter made a sound like a "turkey call" some mornings when i starter it up cold. I replaced with a new starter. took about an hour. Starter cost me just over $100 off ebay. works great now. no turkey call at startup any more.
