3.8? Nope. Not a straight swap. Gotta get a matching DME and I'm not sure the 98s can handle a 3.8 at all. Your best and easiest conversion is to find a 3.4 carrera motor from this era.

What is a DME?

I'd like to get a Boxster with a bit more get up and go and from what I have read the best, most reliable and least expensive way of doing this is to do an eng swap instead of trying to build one.

What combination would be the easiest and best bang for the buck?

Thanks

You'll need a non e-gas 3.4 from a 1999 996. That would be your easiest power upgrade. Even at that there would a bunch of stuff you would need to change to put a rear engine 3.4 in a Boxster. The 101 projects book has a good write up on what's involved.
Then you might want to spend a bunch more time and $$ upgrading brakes and suspension since you're adding 100 more horses to a car that originally had a shade over 200.
Best of luck if you go this route; it will be a fair bit of wrenching to make it work, but you'll have a wicked sleeper on your hands when it's done.
