De-snorking has drawbacks... stuff can get sucked into the filter that would normally not get through (cigarette butts, etc.) which is not a big deal.

However, another drawback that IS a big deal is water. You'll have to be very careful not to squirt water into the air intake when washing your car and make everyone aware of this if you drop off your car for hand washing somewhere. The snorkel does a good job of keeping water from getting into your filter area and then the MAF, which should never get wet.

It does open up the sound of the intake a bit though.

You can install a mesh screen to keep out larger debris like leaves and cigarette butts. The water issue however you cannot protect from. Our latest car wash, if you do such things to your Boxster, blows water in to the sides of the car under pressure so you wouldn't want to do that. I am going to include a pic of the screen I put in my vents to prevent debris.
