New to the Boxster

I purchased a white base model 2002 back in Sept 2014. Didn't really get alot of time to play around with it since winter was coming. I see "de snorkeled" what does that mean? What is the benefit to de snorkeling the car?

Thanks

Whoops. I just clicked on my own (search result) link, and it didn't work. Try this thread: http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/21736-de-snorkeled-my-box-5-minutes-max.html

De-snorking has drawbacks... stuff can get sucked into the filter that would normally not get through (cigarette butts, etc.) which is not a big deal.

However, another drawback that IS a big deal is water. You'll have to be very careful not to squirt water into the air intake when washing your car and make everyone aware of this if you drop off your car for hand washing somewhere. The snorkel does a good job of keeping water from getting into your filter area and then the MAF, which should never get wet.

It does open up the sound of the intake a bit though.

You can install a mesh screen to keep out larger debris like leaves and cigarette butts. The water issue however you cannot protect from. Our latest car wash, if you do such things to your Boxster, blows water in to the sides of the car under pressure so you wouldn't want to do that. I am going to include a pic of the screen I put in my vents to prevent debris.

This was my air filter I replaced just a couple weeks ago. The car had the snorkel attached. I also vacuumed some leaves and other debri out of the airbox, the filter did it's job well. That being said, things will get in your intake regardless, just make sure you check it every so often and replace the air filter every year or so. Its a small expense to keep good airflow. I replace my airfilter in my home air purifier every 3 months and it costs the same as the filter in my Boxster so I don't mind do the car the courtesy every 6 months to a year if I have to.

As for the water, avoid the car wash and you with be fine.
