UDP and 111 degree heat

I figured once it got real hot I'd really know if the UDP would cause issues. Well today it hit 111 and when it gets that hot the temperature close to the asphalt is even higher and car interior temps easily can get into the 130s. My poor Boxster was parked for a few hours this late afternoon in full sun and after getting in the car the A/C worked to cool the car quickly and the coolant temp never went past 8. This was all while sitting in heavy traffic. This was the first hot day and tomorrow it is supposed to hit 115. Thought some of you might care to know if you were debating this mod or have it and wondered if it would stand up to extreme heat.

Too Hot?

I'll take 115 in Phoenix any day over 100 in KS with 40+% humidity. It's brutal.

true, but we do pay for it in much higher cost of living

Just curious, how long were you in traffic? I know the low speed fans turn on with the AC, which explains why the engine temp would very slowly creep up to the 8 and then stay there.

If I am in traffic for 30-45 mins (95 deg., very slow moving) without AC, the gauge will move to the right inner side of the 0 and then the low speed fans turn on (about 212F according to obd2), then turn off at 201-203F, then the process repeats.

I'm curious if the same thing will happen to you with the AC off/with the UDP.

I lived in San Diego for a long time and we used to tell prospective employees that part of their pay was in "Sunshine Dollars"!

LOL
LA is not much better cost wise, but a lot more crowded. I used to live in Simi Valley, Hermosa Bch, Redondo Bch and Torrance. San Diego is a lot greener and even better weather

I always felt like a virgin with long eyelashes in a Mexican jail when I was living in San Diego.

If the place wasn't a magnet for politicians trying to make the place into their own little utopia- it would be awesome.

Yesterday was brutal!
Stepping outside felt like walking into a sauna. Hard to even breathe in this crap

I lived in Tuscon and San Diego about 15 years ago. San Diego is heaven, weather-wise, but AZ is pretty nice, too
Cracks me up when Arizonans complain about 110f temps. Dry heat is nothing! At least when the wind blows, you get cooled off.
When the wind blows here, it feels like Satan is asking you to smell his breath

Great info! I've been back and forth on doing the UDP, but worry about the AC and engine temp (mine sits on the middle of the "0" on hot days in traffic).
I think it may be time to flush the coolant and replace the water pump anyway, so I may just add this to the list

Thanks for posting your results. I'm scheduled for 8/19 to have Jake install a UDP and do a dyno run to see what it added for hp/torque.

4.5 million people disagree.

I am a So. California native myself. Born and raised and left about 9 years ago. Cost of living is too crazy, it's always been crowded (just a lot worse now), what you pay in taxes and what you get in return is out of whack and the crumbling infrastructure and is just sad. Love the weather but Phoenix is pretty damned good too and when it gets hot I remind myself the appreciation from my former California home paid my twice as nice Phoenix home in full. Now if we can do something about the crazy AND imept politicians we'd be better off in both AZ and CA.

The humidity is brutal. As you know we get that right after a monsoon but it dissipated pretty fast. With the low humidity it doesn't feel hot until about 105. In the 90s is comfortable. People from out of state think I'm crazy when I say that but they think in terms of 50% humidity.

That one never worked from me when trying to recruit out of staters. They would come back and say you'd need to give me a 30% to 40% more in salary. Maybe 10% but they'd almost always say no thanks once they figured out what rent/mortgage was going to cost them.

Mine might touch the 0 when the AC is off but like yours the fan kicks in and it goes back down the the middle of the 8. I replaced my water pump back in December plus on the coolant refill (factory coolant) I added a bottle of water wetter. You clean your radiators? They often get filled with crap and that can impact coolant temps.

Definitely report back the results. I'm guessing 5 to 7 hp up top based on my butt dyno.

Will do. I have a baseline dyno run from Jake when I originally picked up the car. Since then I have added headers/performance cats, eliminated the rear cats and added a Dansk bananna muffler. When I get to Jakes on 8/19 we will do another dyno run to see what effect the exhaust changes made. Then he will install the UDP and we'll do another dyno run to see what changes that made. I will share all that data with the crowd here it's just good info to know.

Your car lies to you.. (not joking) what Porsche has the gauge reading? and what the actual temp is? Two different things. Plug in with a PIWIS one day and look at both. You'll see. The BMW guy's deal with the same issue Porsche *wants* you to believe what is on the gauge. It's BS after 195.

I mount data temp sensors within a few inches of the factory temp sensor.. so I have other info coming in. I regular see 205-215 in 2.5 race cars with 3rd radiator. The BoxsterS cars with the 3.2 will go 220 all day (but read a nice steady 195 on the gauge)

The 987's are even worse
