Starter Grind

Hi All

Seeking advice for an issue that just started:

When I go to start the car I get a grinding noise for a brief second after it starts, sounds similar to if you turned the ignition on a car that is running.

Not holding the key in start position longer than normal, car starts find (for now) but just seems the ignition stays engaged for a couple sec's after start.

2000 base @ 65k mileage.

Thanks for any input or suggestions.

Something in the solenoid/bendix area is sticking and not allowing the drive pinion to retract as quickly as it should. Starter should be rebuilt and cleaned

Mine was doing this every cold start unless I let the key sit in the on position for three minutes before starting. Then I replaced my AOS and it disappeared...no idea why but knock on wood the starter is back to normal.

Reads like the Bendix spring on the starter is sticking; not allowing the starter gear to disengage after the car starts.

Easy fix is to replace the starter with a new unit. You can get remans, with all moving parts replaced, at very reasonable prices. Or you could just try cleaning and lubing your current unit.

I paid about $165.00 for a reman at Autozone.

I found a supplier on Rakuten.com for a new starter @ $99.00

Strange but just for the hell of it I turned my ignition on for a couple of minutes and tried and no grinding noise...........

Well already ordered a starter and will replace this week and see what happens.

Trust me...............the grind will be back. And it will happen at the most embarrassing time, like when you go to pick up your date/girlfriend/wife.
