Camshaft sensor check engine light

So this weekend I took the car on an extended drive; I put about 600 miles on it. Today, I was leaving the parking lot after grabbing some coffee when the cel came on. I pulled over and read the code and it give 0348 Camshaft Position sensor A Circuit High Right Bank. However, The car ran just fine and I didn't feel any difference in power.

I cleared the code so that I could drive the car back to the hotel. During the drive the car had just as much power as it always has and nothing seemed wrong. The check engine light remained off for the full 15mi back to the hotel.

When I got back I felt like I now hear a new sound coming from the engine, right behind the front engine cover. It sounds like a static noise, almost like grinding but not quite. When I'm driving, I can't distinguish it over the car and when I stick my head under the car, I can't hear it. I'm not sure what it could be. Maybe I'm imagining it, or maybe it's unrelated.

I guess my main question for the post is, besides a faulty sensor or circuitry, what can that error code come up from? And with the car running perfectly fine and the cel light not coming back on for the ~15mi, is everything ok? Lastly, could this 'new' noise be related and do you have any idea what it could be?

I'm currently 70mi from my house and 30mi from a friend who can help me diagnose it. Should I attempt the drive?

That friend would probably just tell you it's the IMS and that you should donate your rims

Seeing as how you need to decide by tomorrow, send or upload a vid of what you think you can hear. Get the noise as best as possible (if at all) on the vid. I'll keep you updated on when Ill get home tomorrow

Also, could the new sound that you hear be from the new UDP and belt you installed? I guess we gotta take a look

I bought a roller with an IMS failure. I checked for codes and it had thrown a camshaft deviation code.

I thought it could be the udp but when I put it on, I took the car for a drive and listened hard for new sounds, this one was definitely not there.

Oh jeeze. So is p0348 can deviation? It seems like if it was, the car would immediately run like crap

Yes, my 03 S came to me with a failed IMS and when I read the code it was a cam timing deviation code. I don't recall the code number. I'll see if it is still in memory tonight.

The person I bought my car from drove it several blocks home because it was making so much noise. Like rocks in a tin can she said. The "only" damage was the IMS shaft and bearing assembly. The case is still split waiting on new parts.

My sound is nothing like that. It's more like, a poorly lubed bearing spinning. I was afraid some metal dust could have gotten into the tensioner pulley when I was installing the udp (I thought I vacuumed it all). It's weird that I noticed them now though? Like 600mi later?

I can't help you with the CEL, but after fitting your new underdrive pulley, I imagine you fitted a new belt too. Its a fair bet that one of the idler roller / tensioner roller bearings or alternator free wheel pulley has given up with the extra tension of the new belt. Or the new underdrive pulley is loose.
Try running the engine with the rear engine cover removed to get a good idea of the noiseclose up and then run the engine without the accessory belt fitted and see if the noise disappears.
Don't run without the belt connected for more than a minute or two as the coolant pump won't be operational.
I had to replace all my roller bearings plus the alternator free wheel within about 1000km after fitting my UDP, so I know the feeling....

Are you serious - it sounds like a 'Poorly lubed bearing'. I'd get it towed to the nearest Porsche specialist. It could save you a rebuild vs. an IMSB replacement.:chicken: could be your cheapest tow ever...

Shehadehd and I checked the noise...it's a bad roller pulley. More importantly, we DIDNT find anything obvious that would cause the cam CEL. Next stop, oil filter check

Camshaft sensor check engine light

Hi everyone. Thank you for your help. Definitely appreciate it when I'm freakish out over this issue. I have an update to the situation:

Like epapp said, we ended up finding out that one of the rollers was bad by taking of the belt and inspecting the pulley. We ran the car with and without the belt to confirm it. On that note, I left his house and drove to the airport and then home, at total of 100 miles. During the drive, the check engine out came back on (I expect the computer fully reset itself) and it was the same p0343 code. I cleared it again and drove home as carefully as I could. To give you an idea of how cautious the drive was, here is my mpg on the way home


Anyways, When I got home and backed the car into the driveway, I heard some pretty concerning noises from the back of the car as I entered the garage. I usually take advantage of the echoing garage to inspect my car every time I pull in, so I know this was a new sound.

I took a couple sound clips of the car in the garage at idle to get everyone's opinion. The new sound is the rhythmic train track sound.
The first sound clip is of the car right next to where the engine and transmission meet.

Big Yurk Thread. Knowing how you like your Box mate, I really feel bad to hear about your trouble :/

You wouldn't have gas-up in a shabby little remote village's gas station by any chance? As in one of those places where they illegally mix the gas with (evaporating) acetone? Just saying because different type of gas, different type of motor noises. If you are very familiar with the sound of your engine and you throw in some either good/bad quality gas in there the engine often sounds different - some comes with nice 'ping'in' sounds as well.

It wouldn't explain the CEL and code you are getting tho

If the sound gets worst/louder on accel, you know for sure it's a mechanical fault somewhere. If it goes away it might just be the petrol you are using? juss guessin'

Try running the engine in the garage with the accessory belt disconnected (I know, again).

You may have 2 symptoms of failure present, but removing the belt for 60 seconds may give you a clue to the problem....

it burns when I pee - it must be the ims! a 5 sec search of the code indicates electronics fault - either the wiring or the sensor. probably damage to wiring when installing udp. the noise is tensioner pulley bearing from belt change (or it may have always been there and you just started 'hearing' it when the cel came on). even if it wasn't an electronics fault, the code would most likely be deviation going out of spec due to tensioner pad wear.

owning the car won't be much fun if you think every little problem is a catastrophic engine failure.

The sensor's circuit issue could be a huge huge huge conspiracy from Apple??? They don't want their iPad Mini to end up in Porsche owners' dash?! I say there is anti-gravity and reversed polarity embbeded spy devices in each Apple products around the world and Shehadehd triggered the Master Key
