Exactly. No need for a device like this on a 986 (or a 996). Just jack at the rear jack point and the entire side of the car will come up high enough to get jack stands under the car.

That's what I was thinking. He lost me at the part about having to jack up the car so that you could jack up the car.

Sorry, that seems way too unstable for my tastes. The first side might be ok, but then lifting high in the rear to get that second side up on the stands would give me the willies. Further, it would be a tedious task to adjust the heigth of the stands once the car was on them - again, you are creating an unstable situation. The liftbars take minutes to lift the car with, couldn't be simpler or safer. Anyway, ymmv, but that's my experience for what it's worth.
