When I lived in Northern VA I bought a 4WD just so I'd not have to use the Boxster in the snow. But you have to understand that VA had almost no snow removal capability. In my youth, I drove Alfas and a 914 on what were then called "radials" but which weren't snows. I went skiing in those cars. But they had narrow tires.

Wider tires try to plow more snow. So you want the smallest wheels that will fit on your car and the narrowest tires that are recommended.
