There are specifics I would get from your mechanic, like what exactly does he mean when the engine is blown?

debris in oil?
any CEL codes?
oil in coolant?
coolant in the oil?

Did the water pump fail?

Has he boroscoped the cylinders? Is there coolant in the cylinders?

From mechanic:
overheated engine so bad it won't run that sums it up. it's hits on a cylinder here in there just won't run
