Prior to '02, the fuel filter lives under the plastic chassis cover on the P-side just in front of the engine.

In '02, Porsche eliminated the fuel return line and because of this, they claim the Fuel Filter is doing half the duty and is therefore 'Lifetime'. They moved it inside the tank on the fuel pump/fuel sender stalk.

Of course, no filter can ever be 'Lifetime' if it does an effective job of filtering.

But, replacement units are not available separately, they are intergral to the stalk. They get 'changed' when the other components on the stalk fail causing replacement of the entire stalk - SPENDY!

I suspect that as they clog, they work the pump harder as a result.

While we've not seen many issues from clogged filters in later cars, we have seen some fuel pump failures. Cause and Effect?

Cheers!
