Thanks, Danimal!

I had the car on the lift and tried to move things by hand with a pry-bar etc, couldn't really budge anything more than expected. I wonder how much play a dual mass flywheel can come up with if it goes bad? The chassis has 160k on it, the engine 62k. I am unsure if the previous owner replaced the flywheel when the engine was replaced with a good used unit.
Be that as it may, next chance I get I will go and check all the things you had suggested. I remember tightening the axle nuts "a lot", with a breaker bar. Might not be perfectly to torque, but definitely as tight as I could get them. A re-visit and safety check is a good idea anyways.
