Keeping the 986 Cool????
Do you guys have any ideas/tweaks in how to keep the 986 cooled when temps reach above 200-210? Usually when I see the gauge slightly passing the middle of the zero I normally don't run the AC just in case of stressing the cooling system.

Go drive it 100mph for 5min. That should cool her down to about 185.

I guess it depends how daring you are, you could add fans to the top of your engine lid.
I have seen this on a race Boxster. I can only imagine how loud that would be inside.
I live in So Cal and it's hot, but I do not run the A/C, it's all in the perspective I guess.
I drive it hard enough without wasting any HP on the A/C.

i have pickup the speeds of 100+ and seen the temp go down, but still with slow moving traffic it goes back up, so, so long for that thought. MMMM i'll search for some ideas, thnx anyways

Hey Mickey Mouse, are you using factory 0w40 mobile 1 or do you use something heavier like 15w50? Just curious.

15/ 50 Valvoline... I have found that the heavier the oil the longer my engines last.
Most of my car's excluding my Boxster [135,000] have close to 200,000 miles.
I just do a lot of [my own] oil changes, it keeps their blood clean.

I live in Central Illinois where you see alittle bit of everything weather wise. Highs in the 90's during the summer(and very humid) to very mild spring and fall seasons in the 50' and 60's. I drive my car mostly between March and November, so it sees varied temps. Do you think the facory 0w 40 is ideal for these driving conditions? I don't wan't to waste good oil and change the viscosity often either. What do you think?

MY97 15/ 50W is very good oil for down to 50 degrees.
If you do not see lower temperatures then that, I would say it would be "ok."
I beleive the more cushion you have between your bearings and your journals, the better off you will be in the long run.
I have done some research into oil's and there does not seem to be a big problem with Valvoline.
I have heard some racers complain of Castrol wearing the valve guides.
They recommend Valvoline, so I run Valvoline.
I personally have encountered Castrol oil worsening oil leaks. since there seems to be a propensity for RMS type leaks. I would stay away from it.

My car operates at aprrox 185-190 degrees regardless of the outside temp which makes me wonder if changing viscosity due to outside air temp is all that important. I do occasionally drive in 40 degree weather just to stretch the car's legs in the winter. If my car runs at 185 degrees in the winter just like in the summer, why would using 15w 50 not be a good idea in the winter? Also,what is the recammended temp range for 0w40? If there is such a thing.

The lower rating 0w/40 versus 15W/50 just means your lower viscosity oil can handle lower temp's; ambient temp's not engine temps.
Put a quart of oil 50W oil in freezer and see what happens,
Then do the same for 0W/40.
I read a thread were a guy was running 0W/40 and began to hear tappet noises after a Auto X.
The oil thinned and was inable to compensate for the rigors of running hard.
In my opinion unless I have to run such a low viscosity oil as 0W, I would not.
In my temperature and range, price, availability range. I would rather run straight 50W or 40W.
But due to either one of those variables, I can not or will not.

so in vegas, where the temps are 105-110 right now (mild summer here), should i be running 0w-40? or thicker (15w/50)? i would think thicker.
i run only mobil 1, or rather i will (i have only had my car for 2000 miles).

Sure run a little thicker and you will do fine, I don't think you will ever need the 0 Weight stuff.
Mobil1 is good oil, I just run the Valvoline in my Boxster and my wife's car only Mobil oil.
Go figure...
