initiation



what happened?... pulling away from a red light. I hear a pop.... then the engine revs freely... not connected to wheels.... what could have happend... looking at the car at the house at first then will be sending it to the porsche dealer.. thankfully my father works at the dealer so it shouldnt be too exspensive... no fluids on the ground where it happend, oil level is fine, engine still revs normal... tramsisson still shifts... no bolts on the ground.. what could have happened????

hopefully, honestly i smiled as it died because i knew... at least it wasnt the ims haha, no engine light or anything. Just no connection the wheels which is very odd.

i have been hearing an odd noise when leaving stops.. like a metally squeek sorta thing, just assumed the suspension was warming up as it would always happen early after starting to drive... really hope it is nothing over 1.5k because that is about my budget for now. Yet again Thank God the engine is good.

I'd be willing to bet that the bolts on one of the half-axles sheared off at the trans or broke at the joint

Good news? The engine is still running and new axles wont break the bank.

would i exspect anything to dangle benath the car? i realize how lucky i am that its a fairly normal car non porsche non aos non ims non rms sorta issue haha

Possibly, but not necessarily. If it is a half axle issue, it just depends on how and where it broke. Could be trans or clutch related, too...but lets hope not

I've seen several cases where the axle-to-trans bolts fall out or break, usually due to not being replaced and torqued correctly after being removed.

+1 on this. Should be able to push the car a few feet & hear the axle jumping around to verify. If the bolts came loose get new bolts (make sure you get the right length)
clean everything very well & use blue loctite on the bolt threads then torque to spec.

how much is a new tip tranny? if its the worst case scenario.

A rebuilt tiptronic is in the $3-4K range but I'd bet half that that it is the axles. Not a huge deal.

Expect to pay around a couple grand for a replacement tip...

okay was moving the car around in the garage to allow room for another car... put the car in neutral and turned it on for power steer... as we moved the car it went clunk clunk clunk when it rolled in neautral... once where it needed to be i put the car in park... a loud sound like an air compresser commenced.. i quickly cut off the engine... i then pulled up the parking break fairly lightly, as much as i usually would.. and the car procedded to roll.... after moving the car back. i parked it again pulled the emergency break up way high and it stayed.... placed things beaneath the wheels to be safe, now it sits till we can look at the car this weekend, any help diagnosing the problem, why would it make that sound in park, is my trans mish dead, would anything cause the parking break to not be a grippy?

Parking brake cable attaches directly to hub then to those inner shoes. can't imagine why an axle would affect the P brakes. Clunk clunk clunk may indeed be separated axle flopping around as it rolls or CV bouncing around.

So me and my father are likely going to fix this ourselves, he is ver experienced but not with Porsches, as for me it will be one of my first larger services aside from helping out remotely with a mustang engine swap. Would y'all suggest to go to the dealer instead?
