https://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/13/27/76/86/img_1121.jpg It feels so great! Can't wait to go drive it! just need a knob! Here is a preview of the gate: https://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/13/27/76/86/img_1120.jpg Ben |

I knew you'd love the gate ;)
|
How do you like that?
https://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/13/27/76/86/img_1212.jpg https://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/13/27/76/86/img_1126.jpg It's tall and close to the steering wheel, the throw is about as long as stock but stiffer but more precise. It doesn't have the same rifle bolt action as the normal one due to the longer shaft and a bit less stiffness. It feels like a regular short shifter with bushings. I'll try to make a video of while I'm driving :) Now I have to work on the gate ;) |
Big news today guys!
You might not know him yet, but I'm proud to announce that Uniwerks has decided to become the official distributor of my Short Shifters in the US! Ordering is now easier and faster, and there will be less chance for the packages from France to get stuck at the customs or lost. Don't worry though, the price is still unbeatable! So, from now on, if you want one, it's that way -----> Uniwerks Design https://i0.wp.com/uniwerksdesign.com...96%2C770&ssl=1 Christopher who created Uniwerks is a 986 owner too by the way ;) I remain available for any questions ! On my side, I'm still working on the tooling for the new shifter. The first production version will be ready soon! https://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/13/27/76/86/28276910.jpg Ben |
Great design!
Just a few questions... What about sending in greece; do I still have to.order it at uniwerks ? What will be the price including postage Thanks Elias |
For Europe and the rest of the world, I’m still selling them.
I’ll send you a PM ;) Ben |

https://uniwerksdesign.com/product/bens-porsche-996-986-short-shifter/ I am happy to be working with Ben, his shift kits are simply great! I have a 1998 Boxster and will be developing (and distributing) parts for it and select other vehicles. Cheers! Chris |
Awesome! It's always great to see homegrown projects turn into legitimate business with all the great support.
Chris - Any sneak peek at upcoming stuff you're working on for the Boxster? |
It's all thanks to you guys!
I finished the tooling to machine the new style shifter. I might have to refine it a bit but it works, I'll post a picture of it ;) For the other stuff, I'm still working on the Carbon Fiber plenum... it takes time because it's raining season here and I have to clear coat stuff outside... Not easy when it rains every weekends (And it doesn't rain during the week, that wouldn't be fun ^^). As soon as the plenum for the 996 is validated and ready, I'll start the 986 one, this time I won't try to save money by making the positive part myself and I'll leave it to the carbon fiber guys. I also have a few other stuff in a corner of my head ;) For later. Ben |
A customer service review
So I bought one of these from Ben before he started selling them through Chris. A few months back. The car was in storage over the winter so I just got it back in my garage. Couldn't wait to install this. Pulled everything apart and had an issue with the bearing fitment in one of the cups. Tolerances too tight for the cup to slip over the bearing. So there I stand in my garage with a Porsche Interior pulled apart and no shifter. You have to break the old one to get it out. So I'm screwed. Then the panic sets in. I bought this from an individual not a company. And he's in France. ********************. A couple panic e-mails sent to Chris and Ben and I just got the replacement parts in the mail today. From France. And Ben says he's going to start checking the fitment before sending them so shouldn't be a problem for future buyers. Long story short... Ben & Chris are stand up guys who did right by me. What could have been a shi*ty situation turned out fine. Now... off to the garage to drink some beer and finish installing this shifter.
|
Glad to hear back from you!
I hope you'll enjoy your shifter now :) I've sent a few spare parts to Chris so he can answer more rapidly if that ever happens again. It shouldn't, I've checked all the shifters I have in stock one by one and they're all good now ;) Thank you for your feedback! Ben |
I'm glad we could get your parts to you quickly! Customer service and quality parts, that what Ben and #uniwerksdesign are all about! :-)
Cheers! |
Looking for replacement bushings for stock 996 shifter. Actually need just the front one. Some of the “teeth” broke off. Thanks.

Just messing with you, good to see top customer service!!!! |
Sorry I can't really help with your bushing problem :/
What you can do if you don't want a short shifter is buy the cheapest eBay one you find, and just use the bushing with cups. It should fit. Ooooor... you can get a short shifter :D |
Had this in my 996 and loved it. Now i am in a 997. I believe they are the same, but can anyone confirm fitment for a 997.1?
|
They fit all 9X6 and 9X7 from 1996 to 2011 ;)
I haven’t been very active lately... or at least it’s what it looks like! I finally register my enterprise, started a website, and I’m just waiting on a few paper to be fully ready :) Right now (literally right now!) I’m working on a better shifter assembly lever (the white lever in the assembly). Ball bearings and adjustability for a part that often causes problems! Oh, and I started the production of a carbon fiber plenum... but you’ll have to wait a bit ;) |

The short shifter will be the same, it’s the white plastic lever that I’m redoing.
And it will work with any other shifters :) |
And there you go ;)

And it'll be adjustable for side-to-side throw for the shifter 2.0 with the longer lever :) Can't wait to have it on and on car and the car on the road ! Ben |

Does it remove the play commonly present in the 986 console? |
These are the major wear points that need to be addressed:
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1528914029.jpg The tiny points of contact provided by the sphere wear grooves into the receiver in as little as a few months of use. Until this is addressed, you will always develop play, no matter how many bearings you add to it. ;) |
I know. That's just the prototype to validate the dimension and concept ;)

For now I'm spending all my free time working on my car, so testing is not for now :/
I removed everything from the rear except the engine and gearbox. So much rust on that car I can't believe it ! https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_2912.jpg |
Hi guys !
I'm done with the rust, and the Boxster just came out of the body shop last week ! I'll be installing the carbon fiber plenum soon (when I'm done with the Porsche Technician certifications) and I'm working on something else ;) A shifter that will fit the stock space without the need to modify the center console, that is taller than stock while still being short throw, and that will be adjustable and easily and cheaply serviceable! https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/assemb10.jpg |

Thank you :)
I tries different solutions already, but wasn’t satisfied... and a prototype failed in the car ! So I decided to re-do the whole shifter mechanism. It will be more expensive... but worth it! |
Ben, just got one of your latest batch of original BB shorts shifter from Uniwerksdesign. It replaced my original shifter with broken plastic bushing so it definitely feels very precise but laterally it still has play and I can see and feel small gap between the lever and two red nylon washers. Are you working on upgrades to reduce lateral slop at the lever, as well as the white plastic piece you are working on?
|
Hi !
I was limited in adjustment for side/to side play, I allow a small play, even though I try to reduce it as much as possible. If you feel it's too much, you can first try to tighten the nuts a little more, but they should be pretty tight already. Second option is to add shims like the red ones. They are like fiber plumbing seals, and you can use thicker ones if you want. I just bought a 3D printer and I'll see if I can make this better once and for all. Ben |
Can anyone tell me the size of the C Clips from the original ball bearing short shifter. Mine snapped this morning. Thanks!
Disregard found retainer clips at Lowe's 1" E Clip did the trick. Feels new again. |
Quote:
For now I did slip in an additional shim but still side-to-side play is nowhere as tight as longitudinal play... and I’m still trying to get used to extra force to shift, while appreciating short stroke and precise feel. |
