Ideally, you would want the oil temp sensor either where oil coming from the filter (and the cooler) is moving past it, a secondary location would be in the sump.

So is there an adapter plate available for the (screw on) filter? I haven't seen an M96 specific one.

Sorry, I should've been more specific: is there a filter adapter plate that comes with ports or fittings to connect temp/pressure gauges?

No, you need to drill and tap one to accept it.
