winter storage woes.. playing the odds

Hi everyone..

My name's Yen and i've been reading posts here for months now but this is my first post. Love the site and the great contributions. I had spent many hours searching and reading before buying my 05 seal grey boxster this past august. 3 glorious months of "happy motoring" as MNBoxster would say. Just wanted to share my jubilation and now grief.

I had wanted a boxster for about 9 years.. ever since I saw the '97 model at the Canadian International Autoshow in Toronto. Every year since then i would go to the autoshow, just to snap a pic of me with my "dream car" and count down the years until I could make it happen. I promised myself I'd buy one after medical school and this past August, some 9 years later, I found a great deal on a low mileage example, nicely equiped with xenons, 18s, and Bose. The joy of finally sitting behind the wheel of my very own was beyond description.. the first drive literally brought a tear of joy to my eye. I'm sure you all remember that "first" time. I love this car dearly and was pretty sad to give it a final wax before putting it in winter storage this past October.

Herein lies my grief. Usually, in this part of Ontario, i would have expected a nice carpet of snow and a thick layer of road salt by now. Instead I wake up to see not a hint of snow even now after xmas and my baby.. just sitting there... waiting. I've picked up the phone twice to have the insurance put back on the car.. and twice I've hung up before dialing, cause I know that the salt is coming. But the weather forecast calls for clear skies for the next 2 weeks and a mild winter at that.

This is absolute torture. What would you do? How do I get through these winter blues?

Thanks for the nice write up and welcome to the forum. I'm having the same problem with this warm winter and I haven't even taken the insurance off. I was seriously considering taking it back on the road after five perfectly dry and warm weekends. I'd suggest that you be patient and stick it out, as the day you decide to take it out will get the coldest snow storm of the season and the slushiest and saltiest roads out there. And it's not just the insurance -- you'd have to do the whole winter storage spiel all over again. Hang around here and we'll go through it easier together.

im in chicago, and no way in hell will i stop driving the car couse of winter. its a car, and as long as there is no 10 feet of snow (or whatever the clearance for a boxster is) i am driving it.
congrats on the purchase, after a nice introduction like that no pictures of the dream car?

Wow, I really feel bad for you guys up in the north... I drive the same car, year round, on the SAME tires. The concept of not driving the same car all year round is just foreign to me.


Now, all I have to do is GET that darn Boxster! (probably going to look at one this Friday! I hope it works out!)

I've been storing at least one car every winter for the past 25 years or so. It's not that bad, I have Winter hobbies to keep me busy and ease the Jones'n.

But, believe me, it's really great in springtime when you break the car out once again, you'll gain a whole new appreciation for it. Candy every day just rots your teeth, candy only once in a while is a true treat...

I'm in Toronto, I put the car into winter storage two weeks ago.

Took it out of storage today. :]


I'm gonna drive it until we get the big snow dump.

Honestly, she's already got a good coat of wax, it'll take me an hour to re-storage prep her again when the time comes.
