Where to buy 5 chain cam locking tool

I’d like to inspect my chain tensioners to chase a rattle I’m hearing at startup. Is there a place to get just the cam locking tool for 5 chain engines? The 3 chain tool is much more popular for some reason.

Try ebay or Amazon. I bought a full set of tools for the entire engine for $80 years ago. They worked fine.

I’ve looked on both and unfortunately the only kits that have the blade style lock is for the 3 chain engines. Any of the kits for the 5 chain engines use the jig style tool.

i would suggest making one. it is very easy to make, I made one from and old gate hinge and it worked great . There are drawings of it on the net.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Coincidentally I picked up that version of timing kit from eBay too, Homeoboxter, because I'm changing the variocam pads. However I plan to do that job with the engine in the car and I'm concerned about clearance for getting the jig style timing tool on the head. I convinced myself this version is more compact than the other style that comes with the red knobs and will give me the best shot (we'll see). Having the blade style tool to time the engine during the variocam pad change would be nice since that obviously will fit with the engine in the car. I'm not super confident in my fabricating skills, but if it comes to that I suppose I could try and make it! To be honest I'm surprised that this tool isn't floating around for $30 or something somewhere on the internet.

LN is selling the version for the 5 chain separately from their IMS kit? I see that they sell the 3 chain version separately, which engages slots in both intake and exhaust cams, but not the 5 chain version which only engages the exhaust cam.

Iceman, that’s a terrific photo thanks. I read some of your other posts and see that you just did this job in car. What tool did you use to time bank 2?

i eye balled it . its actually pretty easy to tell when you have it, Where the cylinder head meets the cover there is a seam.. if the seam is in the middle of the cutout for the end of the cam when you hit TDC for that side, you have it nuts on accurate!.

There are some really good write ups for this online.

i will tell you this .. if your car requires the left handed threaded rod and nuts to compress the tensioner, ,.. get them , it is absolutely the best way to do it and you can get them cheap from aliexpress and they come fast .

the biggest pain in the ass of the whole job is the damn ebrake cable always being in the way .. its always in the wrong spot lol..

Just an FYI . I had all the old non updated chain tensioners, I installed the new updated ones from Porsche ... made zero difference on cold start rattle. and torquing down the one from bank 2 is a real pain in the ass with the new style .

Amazon had M5x.08 left handed threaded rod and nuts for under $15 all together so hopefully I'll be set.

threaded rod is huge.. reach out if oyu have any difficulties in the project as i just finished mine and its fesh for me .

I'm not sure what you mean by condition as you cant tell much from inspection. they are hydraulic cylinders . I did notice that the one for the main chain pumps up hard as a rock when you immerse it in oil and pump it . The other 2 do not. Very weird, in fact none of the 4 did, whether old or new style.

so who knows.
