Records show “flames from driver’s side intake”

Hi,

I’m looking at a used 01 and I’m going through the service records and see wording that says the customer brought the car in because he saw “flames coming from drivers side intake” and the documented repair was a new clutch and dual mass flywheel. I’m dumbfounded on this one. I’ll add that the owner was older and near death and that the repair invoice does not show and repair of the intake grill or intake parts. Any thoughts?

Lol! That’s what I’m thinking. Maybe to the point of causing a lot of smoke. He went through a clutch in 10k miles.

Sounds like grandpa was seeing things that weren't real.
If you look at how the airbox is shaped, the only way you'd see "flames from the intake" is by setting fire to the filter.

That said: if the airbox is gone, in favor of some poorly-conceived attempt at a CAI, then all bets are off.
