Sounds like grandpa was seeing things that weren't real.
If you look at how the airbox is shaped, the only way you'd see "flames from the intake" is by setting fire to the filter. [emoji6]
That said: if the airbox is gone, in favor of some poorly-conceived attempt at a CAI, then all bets are off.
