just bought a boxster
Hey, I have been searching for a general porsche forum and couldn't find one, so I searched for a boxster forum and what do you know...how about the irony...
I just bought a 2006 new boxster yesterday. Black with full tan leather interior. I love it. I already have 120 miles on it. Anyways I joined cause I have a couple questions and I want to learn from other boxster owners. This is my first porsche but I don't think it will be my last. I'm used to BMWs. PS: I'm not just gonna ask my questions and leave :p Question#1: The dealer says you need 800 break-in miles and during that time you can't go over 4-5k rpm or go over 75mph. This seems like a small amt of miles, does anyone have any personal insight to what would be a good break-in period? All my other cars were 1200 miles at least. Question#2, might as well ask: I am having a hard time finding aftermarket parts for porsches and boxsters in particular. Does anyone know any good sites or places with a good variety of porsche things? Thanks, Mike |
Welcome! Santa came early! :)
Please make sure you follow the 2,000 mile break-in to the tee! (I still believe!) |

Mike, the dealer is very-very wrong about his break-in recommendations. Just read your manual. It is very clear. 1,800-2,000 miles. RPM's under 4,200. Don't lug engine. Longer trips are better. On long trips, don't stay in the same gear the whole time, down shift and then run back up to 5th or 6th. I would also recommend an oil change at 1,000 miles or after the break-in period. Not required, just prudent and worth the $110-$250. What kind of aftermarket parts do you want? Car is still pretty new, so only a few items are available. Try our sponsors or the likes of www.suncoastporsche.com or the Tequipment section over at the Porsche web-site here: http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/personalisation/tequipment/n38/ |

And as for aftermarket, I'm not looking for anything until my break-in period ends, but this is my daily commuter and I drive a lot so I expect it to be soon. I'm not even sure what I could do. Seems like all the parts this car has are top of the line, but I'm looking to increase engine power. I know that's a typical desire but this is a sports car, not to mention my only car, so I guess I don't blame myself. Oh yeah, and I don't want any forced induction. |

Did you buy the "S"? If you want more power, that would have been the better purchase. Adding HP's to these cars costs BIG $$$$$! |

Anyways the money is fine...I knew that before I made the decision. I'm stuck with it for a couple years at least, so I might as well enjoy it the best I can. Is an S catback compatible with a regular boxster? The one on the porscheusa link yo gave me seems to be a boxster S tailpipe. Btw I really appreciate your help. I know I'm asking a lot but my dealer wasn't that helpful. |

Are you talking about this??: If so, all this is really is an exhause tip, and yes, it will fit on your car too for about $340. |

Blah, sorry. |

Clear side markers will add about 2-3 HP!!
And, removal of the airbag stickers adds yet another 2-3 HP's! :D |

Out of curiosity, is there any forced induction available for boxsters? I feel like I am going to have to get customized products if I want anything. (I don't want forced induction really, I just want something :()

wait for your break in period ends....drive it for a while, trust me theres a lot that this car offeres that evn we cant get out of it, but adding HP to these cars is so messes up, few grand for few hp thats what it comes down to.

Hi,
Another newbie ...just bought a Boxster, where I can I get this Go-Fast part or that? thread... yawn... Well, first, break the car in, give it and you a Shakedown Cruise. Next, be sure that you're not interferring with the Warranty by adding non-authorized parts and Mods. Then, do your research, there's lots of information to gather before you start throwing money at the Aftermarket. Finally, before anything else, spend some time and $$ on a proper Driving Course so you can use the performance the car already has to it's fullest - best MOD available! If, after all this you still feel the need to make changes, at least you'll know what you're doing and won't waste time and $$ or hurt the Car. Good Luck!... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |

Maybe you're right, though. I am being impatient. I just want it to be faster than my dad's sl500. Not that he or anyone else will care...lol. Right now I have to drive like an old lady :( |

My advice: Savor the car during break-in. Open it up wide after that and start exploring what it can do. Sign up for a PCA membership and sign up for a couple of Driver's Education or Auto-cross events -- that will let you explore it even further. (You'd probably have to wait for the new season in spring for these). Then you will have a much better feeling about what (if anything) the car needs. You just made the biggest mod ever: got a brand new Box. Take your time to enjoy it and explore it before you jump onto the next one. I have almost 5k miles on my Box and I am still discerning new experiences (sounds and forces) with every new drive I take. If power was such a requirement, you should have looked harder for an 06 S. There are bound to be some left out there, and with very nice discounts, too. That would have been the safest, cheapest, and overall best bang for the $ mod, IMHO. There's plenty of people interested in and doing mods on their cars here. I'm sure you'll hear plenty of suggestions. Just my $.02 Z. |

Follow the recommendations of the manual. Your Porsche, especially 2006, is "designed to be low/minimum maintenance." |

Thanks everyone. I didn't buy an S because it's about 10k more also and a lot more to insure. I am only 18 :\ But this dealer didn't have any anyways so I felt better.
Anyways, I think that upped power will just feel better when I drive it, no? |

No, I don't think I'm being at all presumptuous when you post things like changing the OBD (DME in Porsche parlance) software changes the compression ratios. Clearly the depth of your understanding (or at least expression) is not as deep as you may think. I meant no harm, nor directed any negative comment toward you personally. Take my advice, or reject it, as you choose. Makes me no nevermind... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |

You did it again... Your basically saying "You dont know **************** you dumbass, but no disrespect" in a way you are attacking him, its subtle but VERY anoying and gets old and when you do that in everyother post, everyone tends to notice. |

I think you're being presumptuous when you post something like, "GO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE", as if I haven't ever gotten training or taken courses. Smells like presumption to me. Btw, what do you guys think of this? http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm It's a bit late for me since I'm on mile 160 or so...but is there any truth to this? |

Try Fuel Injector timing, FI duration, Fuel Pressure, Spark Curve, Spark Timing, Spark duration, etc., it's a little more complex than fuel input. The MAPs on the Motronic 7.8 are 500k in size, that's a lot of data and code. I never said "GO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE" - your words, not mine. I suggested a proper Driving Course as a most effective means of spending your money. If you have already taken quality courses, fine, move on. So far as the link you post, that is mainly for Motorcycle engines, perhaps car engines (debatable, and not what Porsche advises), but only engines. The Break-in period allows all the parts - Gears, Synchros, Rotors, Brake Pads, Tires, Wheel Bearings, Ancillary Bearings, Flywheel, Clutch Disc, and such, to develop wear patterns. Following the advice in that article will not accomplish this, but from the sound of it, you already knew that too. I'm not being presumptuous when a guy comes on here and says he has trouble finding Aftermarket parts for the Boxster. I just input Boxster Aftermarket Parts into Yahoo Search and it came back with 90,700 hits. I didn't have any trouble, or were these not enough for you..? As I said, take my advice or not. But, don't come here and jab people because they reply to what you posted with some generally accepted proper advice. Good Luck!... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |

Apparently you don't understand the reason why people subscribe to this forum, especially since they, as you suggest, can use "Yahoo Search" instead. It's plain silly -- or do you perhaps think that people here don't know how to use a search engine..? No, I don't understand why you turn arrogant when someone like Bavarian Motorist utilizes this forum for what it's meant for. -- peer |

Here's a good thread regarding break in : http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/8110-break-period.html BTW, the link you posted is mentioned and addressed in this thread as well... Hope this helps, and welcome the the forum ! Nick |

Um thanks. I can google/yahoo that too, that's kind of how I came up with the obd chip for the boxster. It didn't just walk up to me and wink at me. If you actually looked for anything as opposed to just googling/yahooing some words, you'd find that there's virtually NO after market parts for it. Did you bother to check, or was that too much for you? Also keep in mind I am specifically looking to add power. Narrows it down a bit, doesn't it? Advice is welcomed. I am having trouble seeing how calling me a "newbie" and comparing my thread with other similar "newbie" threads is advice. Maybe because it isn't ;) |

Like I said as well, you aren't factoring insurance into this either. It's easier for me to scrape together a few hundred bucks here and there than to be obligated to a 150-200 more a month. I own a business and I'm not always certain how much I am going to be raking in. I'm just playing it safe I guess. |
